Carnage Visors is, for example, awful. But then so is WMS. But, again, that's nothing to do with quality. That's just my opinion.
Proved your own point, to me Carnage Visors is fantastic especially to do yoga flow to....
You can easily argue that the quality improved significantly (in a colloquial rather than statistical sense)when Lol left if you compare the lyrics of Meat Hook to say.. The Loudest Sound.
What is an interesting question is; what specific contribution did Lol have whilst he was in the band which produced this 'higher quality' and what specific factor was missing when he departed which caused the 'lowering of this 'quality'?

Nice angle. He was certainly part of the "essence" of the band many of us fell in love with. His drumming was instrumental (no pun intended) in the sound of the early material, & perhaps some of his keyboard work but perhaps to a lesser extent (although it was nice to see him join on those Reflections shows). The sound, being of that pared back nature, made his keys more to the fore than say anything from The Top onwards. But I think (stab me if I'm wrong here) lovekittens is alluding to lyrical content since 89. I'm struggling there, as it's well known Robert recycles stuff continually, but maybe I am missing the point here.
My question definitely includes lyrics but was intended to be more all-encompassing.
Thanks for deflecting my frustration about the thread. It’s a struggle for me to interact with other humans most days.
No problem. I have the same problem truth be told. Text based communication can be a bit dry, so it's good that we're able to continue to expand or even focus on the key thought here. I moderate on a The Sisters Of Mercy forum & believe me, there are some discussions there involving Wayne that get really hot potato-ey It's nice to have a discussion that doesn't involve virtual fights in the parking lot
Disintegration was the last album to have a big effect on me at its release, the following ones all sounded lower to me for different reasons, even if I still buy them on vinyl. There is just something no one noticed here: All cats are grey can NOT be about Lol's mother death as she died during the 81' tour, months after Faith release... BTW, I love Carnage Visors and really think Wild mood swings is really under rated.

Well, the original question was just something I've wondered...and it seems like you guys A) Think I'm stupid for asking it, and B) expect me to have all the evidence to back it up when it was just something I was wondering, and C) deny the fact that Lol wrote anything, and D) Are unable to see that the lyrics have gotten worse over time.
lovekittens, your opinions and observations are completely welcome here. Certainly do not think A, B, or C...but I have to admit I just disagree about D. That's all. I think Lol was very important to The Cure in many ways, but I also think it's subjective what people think is "good" and "bad" when it comes to music. My opinion, you don't have to agree, and I definitely don't agree with everything and everyone here
I want to add that to me I was feeling that this post, comments and responses, was feeling a bit tetchy. As you say, Steve, it's the dryness of text; we don't get that in a discussion over a jar. So thanks Lovekittens for naming what was being felt there and giving us a chance to welcome disagreement in debate. Now...about that Wayne Hussey chap (eh..wheres my smileys gone? Evil grinning smiley please...)
I believe it was either Lol's book Cured or a Q&A where he answers a question about what song is for his mother... If I remember correctly, it is actually a song off of Pornography...
Sorry, I'm not following this thread 100% but what lovekittens needs to know is that this place, this forum, is a wonderful place to be. I've never talked to more supporting and gracious people. People I have never met but feel as though I know with my whole heart...a family. and what do families do? They bicker and fight but they love each other. Just because we may all have different opinions on something does not mean anything. You may have different opinions on the quality of the Cure without Lol with another member, but you may be in complete agreement about something completely different.
Thanks, I won't let my experiences in this thread cloud my judgment.
And by the way, I am a big fan of The Beatles. I also love Elvis Presley...I wonder how many Cure fans love Elvis. Probably not many!
All Cats Are Grey is one of my favorite Cure songs. I think Lol's drumming on the early albums is really superb. I like the minimal aesthetic of the early albums. And I do think that as a founder, Lol probably had a lot to do with that aesthetic.
Yes, as time went on, he did contribute less because of his alcoholism.
