I ran these two songs through the lyricometer, and the result shows that the newer lyrics are lazy and uninspired.
Example 1:
Scarred Your back was turned Curled like an embryo Take another face You will be kissed again I was cold as I mouthed the words And crawled across the mirror I wait Await the next breath Your name Like ice into my heart
Example 2:
We were so in love The happiest day Yeah the happiest day I knew But summer sun sea of gold This perfect day oh so long ago Whispering dreams so blurred and tired We have to keep this day alive Whispered dreams so young and tired It's hard to hold this day inside
No. The older lyrics were written by a young man who was addled on drugs & in a pretty bad mood. The newer ones were written by the same person with more life experience & brave enough to broach other subjects. Of which there are many.
Still absolutely nothing to do with Lol being there or not. He never wrote, nor inspired lyrics (except for perhaps Shiver & Shake). Would you say the lyrics to Watching Me Fall or Open are lazy & uninspired? If you want lazy, how about reading the offer printed on the back of a sugar packet? Fire In Cairo is hardly literary genius either. Although musically it's a joy. The whole idea that there has been a drop in quality is totally subjective & cherry picking certain songs only serves to underline the fact a person either likes or dislikes those songs.
What Lol says in that interview is that Robert wrote lyrics that were influenced by things things that affected Lol, like the passing of Lol’s mother and Robert’s grandmother in the case of All Cats are Grey. But in the end, Robert only sings lyrics that he wrote himself.

“I had a hand in some Cure lyrics so obviously they were from my own experiences, like "All Cats are Grey" which was about my mother's death. But also Robert's words have always helped me too.”
He’s distinguishing between his own words and Robert’s.
This article says Lol “released an EP called The Grey featuring a cover of The Cure's "All Cats Are Grey"—which he claimed credit for writing lyrically.”
Still has absolutely no bearing on quality though. & it's (if it's true) only one song out of hundreds (that we have actually heard). It also contradicts this a bit, although wikipedia is known for not being 100% accurate. I think the use of the word quality here is probably wrong as quality is typically a measurable trait. Sure, you might think the band was better before Lol left & that's fine. It's an opinion. Have at it. I don't think that's the case. They've been both good & bad before & after he departed. Carnage Visors is, for example, awful. But then so is WMS. But, again, that's nothing to do with quality. That's just my opinion.

Yep, THIS. ^^^^^^
Look, I'm not trying to knock Lol or his value to The Cure when he was in it. I liked his drumming, he seems like a nice guy and I thought his book was great. But this whole conversation seems so arbitrary. And a little dismissive to other band members. I would imagine everyone in the band has to contribute something, otherwise they wouldn't be in the band.
Well, I'll be glad to leave this forum if you'd like. You guys obviously have no room for opinions (or facts, for that matter) other than your own.
Not at all. I think it's an interesting discussion & I've already said that opinions are fine. Everyone has them, so to have a problem with that would be incredibly stupid. But I am yet to see facts. Or anything conclusive. From the perspective of a quality engineer, I'd be thrilled to see any data that would confirm the hypothesis that there has been a drop in quality. I'm a bit of a nerd like that.
I tell you what I do concede in terms of a drop in quality & that is in the quality of what is being re-issued over the past few years. It has been on shoddy quality, stupid coloured (& even worse, picture discs) vinyl pressed in slap dash pressing plants from CD masters that were already compressed to oblivion in the first place. That can be measured. And has been measured But that's not linked to Lol's departure either. That's just UMG being greedy con men.

Well, the original question was just something I've wondered...and it seems like you guys A) Think I'm stupid for asking it, and B) expect me to have all the evidence to back it up when it was just something I was wondering, and C) deny the fact that Lol wrote anything, and D) Are unable to see that the lyrics have gotten worse over time.
I see that totally. & that's also just opinions differing to yours. I don't see that as being wrong either way. I know plenty of people who think the world ended after Disintegration. Heck, I know folks that think it ended after Pronography. Doesn't mean anyone's wrong or right does it? I think (personally) it's a lot healthier to have the discussion than to have a thread that nobody takes any notice of & you've managed to whip up a good one. Doesn't mean I'm not wrong & doesn't mean I'm not right. That goes for you too, so thankyou for starting the thread Just don't start me on the B**tles, because everyone else is wrong about them & I am most definitely right
