A six string bass is just a bass with additional B & E strings.
I at least know that much. I know the musical part just not the models. It does have a richer sound to it than the guitar. Since Robert is probably not going to go into any screaming guitar solos on the upper frets of the guitar (other than when he plays The Kiss) he probably prefers the 6 string bass.
The Bass VI has a shorter scale than your average bass guitar... and also a smaller space between the strings.
The word on primary was that it was to be recorded with the Bass VI but the lower strings were too floppy (which is a common issue on the VI, depending on the string gauge used... Robert used some pretty light ones, we can see him bending the strings a lot on the In Orange version of Faith).
Having said that, I never managed to get that Primary bass sound on a regular bass.

So is Steve correct? One four and one six bass in the recorded song?

I'm not sure. 6 strings do sound different so Steve must have a better ear than us

Primary was recorded with the Bass VI. By the way, have a look at the 1990 versions: 1 Bass and & 2 Bass VI !!!!! Real good configuration !
In fairness, Robert also used a raft of effects to make it sound the way it did, but yep, it was the VI. It would have been really hard to hit the higher notes/chords with regular guage bass strings. They are pretty thick and to hold them down would have taken quite a tight grip.

" I actually wrote "Primary" on it and incorporated it into a few other things. But to record the actual take of "Primary," I had to use a Fender Precision bass instead. The six-string bass was pretty iffy down at the bottom of the neck of the sixth string. It buzzed and you couldn't hear what you were playing."
