The next few posts are going to be along the theme of "bands I grew up with".
Obviously there are many bands that I like, some going back 25 years and some recent, but there are a few specific ones that defined me, and shaped me.
Either by the classic songs that still mean a lot to me today, or by the sheer number of times I saw the band live, and so they gradually seeped into my DNA. Some bands, looking back, weren't actually that great, but at the time as a young adult trying to find a place in the world, these bands were all you had.
Maybe you have the same?
I'll start with a few:
Inspiral Carpets The Wonder Stuff The Mighty Lemon Drops The Family Cat
good topic really. i can't say much beacause the bands i grew up with are the same i still listen to, but maybe i can be more precise telling you which particular album. the first band i loved was the Cult, oohhh i listened so much to Love and Dreamtime that i needed to buy new copies for both albums. Well beeing an early Cult fan it was easy for me meet The Sisters of Mercy (FALAA was played until it started to jump on SKoS), Joy Division (the live side of Still on tape...can't tell you!!!!), The Cure and the HoTD. Then i discovered The Christian Death (Rozz rules!!!) Deathwish and The decomposition of violets are still with me but they can't play anymore; the Bauhaus are next with Swing the Heartache and Siouxsie with Peepshow (masterpiece IMO). A special place for The Mission....loved Naked and Savage on my first bootleg recorded in the 8 at the Town&Country ("Mum if touch that old broken tape....") i had painfully threw the tape in the trash bin. But what i really still play often and often are The Fields of the Nephilim (played too much the early studio albums) that i discovered only in the 90's and i still play Fallen and a bunch of gigs. Sex Gang Children: Play with Children and Medea can't avoid to mention i found on them the song i loved soooo much i couldn't stop playing. other bands like New Model Army, Danse Society, Alien Sex Fiend, Death in June, Killing Joke, dead Can Danse are still my favs and deserve a mention, but they weren't so important

Have no fear, I will be covering the Cult!!!
they weren't so bad and Love still remembers me of a guy who gave me the tape to listen to in the 86 and died year after in a car accident, i'll never forget him and i owe him the tastes i have in music
Basically I grew up with Iron Maiden and Judas Priest, and later on with The Cure, Sisters of Mercy and Depeche Mode. That was me up until 17, when I begun to spread. I am grateful to IM and JP for the childhood lessons. Before KMKMKM, only album that had really revolutionary impact on me was Maiden's legendary Number of the Beast. As far for JP, just look at this for sake:

Well, let's see. I was crazy about British bands in the 90s (I'm a 90s teenager), Suede, Pulp, Oasis, The Verve, Elastica.... I'm still a huge Suede fan and I still listen to Pulp and The Verve or Jarvis Cocker's and Richard Ashcroft's solo albums from time to time. I also liked bands like Faith No More and Pearl Jam. I've never been too crazy about Nirvana but liked a few of their songs, too. And then I discovered The Cure with the Wish album.
to many too mention but i used to be a metalhead , the priest , maiden , the crue , motorhead but when i didn't have my metalhead on , the jesus and mary chain , the smiths , the cure , echo and the bunnymen , the stuffies , depeche mode , pwei just to name a few (there was far too many to name here . i used to work in a second hand record shop so had access to many types of music) . i was and still am i mood music person , ie what ever mood i'm in i'll compliment with the music .

I was also there to try to follow as much as I can. But some bands I met earlier, some much later. For example, I was familiar with Sisters of Mercy with 13, with Joy Division much later. I was much earlier into The Mission than into The Clash!? With 15 I already found metal boring a little bit. Still, I am grateful to Maiden especially for some very valid lessons. But nothing changed my life like The Cure in 1989. Since then they are just growing and growing so much in me that for last several years I spend my time with them much more than with everything else in combine.

Oh yes, I forgot about the Sisters of Mercy and Guns 'n' Roses! Ha, I was a huge fan of MTV when I was about 12 - 15 years old, I'd watch MTV all afternoon until my parents returned from work and told me to switch it off. I still listen to these old CDs from time to time but haven't followed all of these bands. But every time I hear bands like G 'n' R, Pearl Jam or The Verve played in the pub or at some party I scream and jump along and feel like a teenager again.
Duran, Duran, Kajagoogoo, Spandau Ballett, Depeche Mode, Culture Club and the German New Wave (Neu Deutsche Welle) in the 80s. In the 90's Blur, Oasis, Pulp, Suede, The Verve and many more. Okay, and not forget: THE CURE, Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Sisters of Mercy etc.
I walk wondering why, the same dream so many times
For me, I guess it all started with Blondie really. I had friends who got me into The Clash & I was listening to Siouxsie too & was tickled at the fact I used to deliver he daily paper to the Hong Kong Garden take away in Bromley, where I lived at the time My mum hated when I showed a liking for The Stranglers or The Buzzcocks on Top Of The Pops. I did toy with The Police, but they sort of lost the plot with Ghost In The Machine (although it has some fine tracks on it). Then ska really hit & I was swept away with all the Two Tone stuff, which was "okay" by my mum, as it meant me wearing brogues (sensible shoes) & stay press trousers & Fred Perry T shirts. "Very smart" was her opinion. & then I went and got myself a number 1 buzz cut It wasn't until 82 that The Cure really came into my life, after a time of big upheaval & that re-opened the Banshees door & led to more dark music via John Peel's late night shows. Listening to that lot made me go & investigate the bands that influenced them & thus my adoration for Led Zeppelin, ACDC, Hendrix, Pink Floyd & the like.
Some points are very important in general iconography of 1980`s. I think, especially for boys, it was very important to have opportunity to see Patricia Morrison with 13 or something :-) For sure she was starting point regarding the Sisters for many in 1987.
