Interesting take. I started to think it was a subtle jab at Chris Parry after what he did with the first album. This seems like Robert intent on "doing his own thing" & not letting Parry in on it.

I'm not sure it's that personal. It's possibly the opposite. I have a suspicion that this is about hotels or a hotel which, if you think about it, are pretty impersonal. "Fake" even.
I think that house is a metaphor for another person. I feel the whole seventeen seconds album conceptually is about people's interactions with one another. That's what I get from it. Equally, the idea of staying somewhere strange is an interesting take on it too Steve!!

I think there's merit in the "personalising" of impersonal subjects for sure, but most of the album was written after RS got into a fight in a hotel in Newcastle. Just seemed to click into place for me

The line about drowning while pretending to swim speaks volumes about being swallowed up by trying to be someone or something and failing (the drowning part).
