540km (or ~2000 ping pong tables) northwest & our globetrotting groupsters arrive in Montréal for a 2 night sojourn & maybe to watch the formula 1.
Through the ages Montréalians were rubbish at sports. Actually all Canadians were really. But Montréalians were the worst eh.
So tired were they that they did some benchmarking & seeing that the English invented a sport that they could actually win at the city decided to take that idea & use it to their own advantage.
After studying lacrosse & shinty they came up with something they couldn’t possibly loose at. Now all they had to do was to wait until winter because part of their master plan involved ice.
& in March of 1875, residents banded together to collect up all the ice off the local ponds & swimming pools, installed it at what is now known as the Victoria Skating Rink where the first organised game of modern ice hockey was born.
Well, I say “Organised”, but it was chaos. The puck kept going into the crowd, furniture got smashed, spectators fled in confusion & there was even a massive fight afterwards between the players & NIMBYs who didn’t want their ice being used for hockey.
So modifications to the rules were made, perspex barriers were installed & all fighting was limited to just the players on the rink.
Sure enough, the Montréalians were good at something &, taking advantage of the fact no-one else knew how to play, dominated in whacking a tiny, hard rubber disc around for decades.
But let’s not get into thinking Montréal is only known for hockey & maple syrup. Let’s raise a glass to the city that also gave us ……*drum roll*….. peanut butter.
Skipping the peanut butter & the maple syrup today will be maccatori , limegreen & Danielle as they head to the arena where staff have been busy all day removing all the ice so people don’t slip over during what we hope is a fantastic show. Before that though, there’ll be time to nosh on some poutine & guzzle some St. Ambroise eh.
We have 6 colours to play with so this can work for both shows.
