Under the shadow of the best college radio station in Southern California & the birthplace of #fullpenguinmode, one of Los Angeles’ lesser known activities, other than surfing, is its small, cottage entertainment industry.
One of the key regions for this enterprise, was named after 999’s 1980 promo single from their smash album, The Biggest Prize In Sport.
There was some controversy on the launch of the promotional campaign due to a miscommunication between the two parties & so the last four letters of the big sign were removed under cover of darkness & Hollywood was born.
Such was the success of the campaign, movie studios started producing notable classics like Plan 9 From Outer Space and Queen Of Outer Space which, in turn, drew many famous celebrities to the city which was a real boost and gave the region a fighting chance of matching their altogether more successful Indian rivals.
Soon LA began to star in locally made films.
It expertly played Gotham City in Batman & Robin so well that it reprised its role on no fewer than five other movies in the franchise, including two fan-made ones.
Following that, it’s super-hero experience lent itself to providing the scene of Peter Parker’s fateful spider-bite. But, such was the city’s acting versatility, exquisite makeup & orange fog machines adorned the landscape in Bladerunner 2049 as it played a dystopian future version of itself flawlessly which, after years of being snubbed, won it an oscar in 2018.
Steering clear of any replicants today, fiveswinglive & olivier will no doubt pause for a couple of waffle sandwiches and some ice cold Karma Kolsch so let’s wish them a great gig today.
