We start this intro with a strange coincidence. Originally named after ABBA's 1974 Eurovision triumphant masterwork, the capital city of Texas gradually had to accept that a shortage of Vikings & flat pack furniture stores was confirmation of its non-Swedishness & so a name change was ordered.
In a city so steeped in musical culture the ideal choice was Austin City Limits, after its longest running music TV show. Of course a legal row forced the local government to rethink & the name was shortened to simply Austin to avoid confusion & also as a tribute to 70’s legend the Bionic Man.
The city forms part of the Texas Triangle where mysterious disappearances of boats, planes & miscellaneous vehicles never happen, so it’s perfectly safe to fly, drive or sail there.
The slogan of the city is “Keep Austin Weird” & this is reflected in another of its names, Bat City which is an FCC approved version of Batshiat City meant to underline the general weirdness. To add the the craziness, every Thanksgiving a five mile long turkey trot is held where fans of 1920’s dancing can shake a tail feather & share the streets with local turkeys before picking one off to deep fry for the evening meal.
But it’s not all fun & games in America’s 11th largest city. A horrific event in 1974 cast a long shadow over Austin when a group of teenagers were brutally murdered, dismembered & eaten by a local man known only as Leatherface who, after years of rehab, went on to pursue a successful music career under the name Corey Taylor, a name conceived to shake off any negative connotations that could arisen from retaining the name Leatherface.
With the deep dive into the city’s history done, it remains to wish all who are going to the show tonight a truly special evening after having paid a visit to the Franklin’s BBQ food truck for a light snack of brisket, sausages & beans with a side of ice cold Lone Star.
