If you thought Gothenburg was goth, then boy do I have news for you?
Welcome to Leeds which is goth A.F.
Situated in the upper right corner of the People's Republic Of West Yorkshire, Leeds has an unparalleled reputation for being the gothiest place that ever gothed.
But it was hard work. Following the collapse of the textile industry the Loiners were hell bent on cheering themselves & other people up.
Using the last scraps from (now closed) the local fuzzy cloth factory one Harry Corbett seemed to find a winning formula. He fashioned a yellow bear who sidelined as an amateur magician & a small grey floppy-eared dog who were often joined by a gingham-robed panda called Soo. Sooty & Sweep became an instant sensation & very soon living rooms all over the city began to ring out with roaring laughter & pub crowds chanted the phrase, “Izzy wizzy, let’s get busy,” every Saturday night.
However, one man in one of the pubs, Joseph Priestley, was still not happy. Sick to death of flat ginger ale & cola, he decided to do something revolutionary by inventing fizziness. This new compound, mixed with any number of lifeless soft drinks of the time, produced the wide range of carbonated beverages enjoyed today the world over. One such drink was cider. & this is when the gothier side of Leeds began to rebel.
Somewhere, above a Leeds chemist shop, Andrew Eldritch, an immigrant from Cambridgeshire, founded The Sisters Of Mercy & this sparked the goth revolution to oust the glove puppet masters Corbett had foisted on the city.
Newly fizzy cider had become the main ingredient in the darklings’ cocktail of choice, snakebite & black which was drunk by the bucket-load to a backdrop of The Sisters.
Joining the crusade to wipe the smile off peoples’ faces came the March Violets, soon to be followed by Red Lorry Yellow Lorry & Salvation. It wasn’t long before The Rose of Avalanche joined the fray & Leeds had regained that sullen gloom that seemed to have been all by extinguished by 3 stupid glove puppets & their creepy guardian with goth clubs regularly filling dance floors with fizzy-beveraged-up punter every weekend.
But let’s not forget. The Cure is NOT a goth band and they’ll be in town to turn that frown upside down & getting happy at the First Direct Arena (as the Second Direct Arena was considered too small) will be martyuk , wilgy , scardwel , twochordcool , screwjack , carlfandango ,catsncheese, cold & BlueHughes after sinking their teeth into some fackle and downing a pint or 2 of Yorkshire Gold. Have a smashing time folks
