Today’s stop will be the ancestral home of Bolognese sauce (or “Bol” as the gen-X-ers call it) where locals will insist you need to add milk to the ingredients & include pancetta as well as beef. Although regular bacon will suffice at a pinch. Always best to simmer the sauce for about 3 hours to get the best flavour so set aside 4 hours for preparation & cooking.
Bologna was originally named after a sausage. But, after gaining the nickname “Baloney”, meaning nonsense, the city felt it need to create Bolognese in an effort to appear more serious. And it worked. Soon students the world over considered their own variation on “spag bol” was the pinnacle of culinary achievements.
In the middle ages, to combat dwindling tourist numbers, there was an attempt to construct a leaning tower that would enable visitors to take highly original & amusing selfies beside that made them look like they were holding it up with one hand so they could post them on farcebook and instagraph. Many attempts were made. The Asinelli tower (funded by dark donkey cash) & the Arengo tower were both considered too straight, but eventually the local building firm nailed it with the Garisenda tower which created a massive uptick in footfall in the city with many a smartphone clicking away at people with their arms in the air for seeming no reason at all. Until you saw the photo being taken.
So popular was the tower that, renowned travel blogger, Dante, included it in Canto XXXI of the Inferno.
This brought claims of plagiarism from Pisa on the west coast who felt they had the monopoly on goofy selfies. However, copyright lawyers successfully won Bologna’s case on the grounds that the tower there & the one in Pisa were entirely different colours & therefore couldn’t be mistaken for one another. So now you know.
Rolling into the birthplace of the finest football referee ever to blow a whistle today will be charlottemargita , bubbo , andysabre , fiveswinglive , ruegi , wilgy , & thebighand who, no doubt fed up with spag bol, will be gorging themselves on tortellini or tortelloni for the vegetarians with a few Birra Cerquas on account of its slightly A Forest-y logo
We hope you all have a wonderful time seeing a wonderful band later.
The city flag today is easy. I recognise it from somewhere.
