Zagreb is a very special destination for The Cure. It’s unique in fact as it’s the only city on the tour that starts with a letter “Z”.
None of the other destinations come close, although Vienna had a darn good go.
Apparently Zagreb ranks as a global city with a beta rating. Which means it’s still under testing so it can be a bit buggy. Some steps might be missing & a few walls might be shorter than they’ll be when the finished version is ready for roll out & visitors are asked to leave feedback so that the admins can make improvements for the eventual 1.0 release.
Nobody’s terribly sure where the name of the city originates. The Romans, Hungarians, Germans & even some folky types with stories about some vicar who dug a well during a drought in the 14th century.
However the bloke down the pub can confirm that it was, in fact, named after an asteroid discovered in 2008 by the the Astronomical Observatory of Mallorca. &, if you look at the photo, you can see the resemblance. It’s uncanny really
Previously designated as 2008 EG8, it had to change its name in case it was confused with the Honda Civic EG8, which, incidentally, starred in the movie Gran Torino.
Zagreb has another space connection in its most famous daughter. Yes. Ambassador Delenn was born in the city in 1955 but moved to Minbar in the early 90’s. She was known to have the deciding vote in whether the Minbari should got to war with humans. A war which she eventually ended with help from John Sheridon after becoming a human/ Minbar hybrid. So a true hero of Zagreb.
It seems nobody’s heading there today. But if they were, they’d be having some Cuspajz & a few bottles of Ožujsko en route.
The flag is a simple affair, but maybe we can squeeze some of the yellow, white & green in there.
