I remember when "Before Three" debuted live prior to the album release many people were saying the same and also things like "already an instant classic" but later when the studio version on the album had been heared you barely read anything like this anymore. Let´s wait and see how the album version is going to sound.
Or some of us could enjoy it now and think it's great, and continue to do so once the record comes out, or some of us might not feel that way.
I didn't like Before Three when it came out live, and still don't really care for it.
Diiff'rent Strokes for different folks.
If you have a lead on Brisbane 21 August 1992 - CT version, for the love of Bob, let me know. Please!
It is not about liking or not liking the song in general, but declaring it as one of the best Cure songs ever, based on a low quality live-version. This song can sound a lot different on the album. I was mentioning "Before Three" because it has a notable different feel/atmosphere on the album compared to the first live version.
At the same time, as the lyrics reminded me of Lovesong...
"HOWEVER FAR AWAY I will always love you"
At first I thought it could be related...
But then I noticed what happened at second 0:34 in the video below, which made me believe the lyrics / the song means a lot to Robert...
Yeh and before that Reeves goes up to him seemingly to do something similar but backs off.
The line pulled directly from Lovesong to me indicated initially that it's a song about aging together (with Mary) but the lullaby lines seem to talk to parents? I guess from the pat Simon gave him, and what's happened in the last few years it's more parenty? Who knows....

Maybe monghi thinks its one of the best songs ever? Is he not allowed to think that based on what you've seen??

I had read this as a love song for Mary. The fact it's normally played right after "Lovesong" suggested that reading to me. But your interpretation is also possible.

I agree about Before 3: I had liked I in its live rendition before the album release; it disappointed me on the album.
That's why I'm a bit "anxious" about how these new songs will land on the album. Mixing and production were mediocre on the last 2 albums.
On the other hand, Paul Corkett is producing this one and he did a good job on Bloodflowers. So I want to stay positive about it :-)

For me in this song Robert imagines the end of his own life, wrapped around tha arms of the one who has to be there with him in the end, after all, even their love will come to an end, nothing is forever. Lyrically and musically they are reaching such high levels of sensitivity, I can't help but admire such masterpieces.

Yes he's had so much death around him in such a short period, I'm not surprised. This song grew on me. At first I was like blah but once you hear it live you get hooked. And at his age you do start to think of your mortality. I'm right behind him.

I was watching one of the recently uploaded US tour vids on YT and I'm pretty sure that before or after this song RS said "I wrote that one for my dad, I wish I'd written it earlier", or maybe he said "sooner", regardless, the intention was that it was about or for his dad.
There def seems to be a shift towards facing and being acutely aware of his own mortality in these new songs.

And it seems Simon had adopted it to pay homage to his wife who recently passed by putting his bass up in the air at the end. Beautiful. Really grew on me this one.
