It’s all over the interwebs this morning so sadly I’m more convinced now. I’m not into vilifying anyone about this but I do think making an announcement like that on social media is unprofessional and, “maybe not the best idea.” I wouldn’t really expect that of a 60+ year old person unless they were lacking in judgment or maturity or having a difficult time of it. As we’re pretty much all having a difficult time of it now for a *very* sustained period of time, I can’t help but feel concern for Simon’s state of mind. I can’t imagine he is feeling very good right now, no matter the circumstances.
I’m sad, but not overwhelmingly so. The guys are getting up there and they certainly don’t owe anyone continuing this venture. It’s been a long ride. I can’t imagine wanting to stay on one project for so long.
Of course TC can’t last forever, nothing can. The guys deserve a break, already.
Couldn’t have said it better myself! The last line you wrote is absolutely painful, but it’s also so incredibly true: nothing lasts forever. So good luck to Simon! But today since I’m upset, I’ll be at home licking wounds.
I'm watching the socials with interest & it's quite cringe-worthy to see the usual suspects tweeting the same story based on a farcebook post a zillion times from various music "journalists"* who seem to get their "scoops" from social media these days.
*fairly loose definition of the word journalist. Hacks would be a more accurate description.
Exactly, all conjecture is completely ridiculous and just fodder for the rumor mill. But that's what people seem to thrive on, so no surprise.
I sometimes think it's attention that people thrive on. When one account parrots 30 or so copies of the exact same story/ farcebook post, that is some desperate attention seeking.

It’s just for hits to drive advertising revenue, yes?

For the websites it may well be. But they are all printing the exact same farcebook comment & a bit about how long he's been with the band. Every "article" contains the same thing and the same headline. Except Brooklyn Vegan who actually claim he said something completely different in their headline despite their "article" being virtually identical to everybody else's. For social media posters, it's just about self-attention. 30+ identical stories from different outlets can't be for anything else unless those posters have shares in every single one of those sites. If they posted multiple articles from the same site, then that would mean the site itself getting the attention.
Sorry for confusion. Sadly, I can see it totally happen, if Simon really left the band. Or maybe the songlist could change, if Simon demands to remove the songs he composed. Would be really a shame. From what I understood from Roberts last interview, the words and singing were finally done (after his major problems) and the record only needed to be mixed.
No Simon couldn't insist that any songs he has a co write for be dropped from the live set. Otherwise cure sets would only be songs from 83-85, Japanese Whispers, The Top, The Head on the Door, ie songs that have the sole composer of Smith. The rest of the catalogue has co writes with ex members Tolhurst, Dempsey, Hartley, Thompson, Williams, Bamonte, Gallup.
In the same way that 4:14 Nightmare was shelved due to Porl leaving the band and being involved in the songwriting credits, the 2 new Cure albums will be shelved because of Simon's shared songwriting credits. The only chance of any new material being released is the Smith written solo album metal machine music. Yippee!
Next step for the band would be recruiting a new bass player and start writing brand new songs for an album.

No one has talked about the old songs......
Concering the new ones/the unreleased album: I know they have a kind of agreement to share writing credits together for the songs for quite a while now even if they did not write the music together. But they could change this and only give writing credits for the people who really wrote the particular song. So Simons Songs could be removed. Further on there is still a chance that Simon agrees to release his songs.

You mean CRAIG!! I saw him hijack the story as soon as it leaked, cut snippets from other people's quotes and made them his story. I don't know why people worship him, hang on his evey word, there's probably more knowledge about The Cure on this forum than he could ever hope to achieve.

I was talking about the new unreleased songs from the long teased new (dark) album.
Ahh I see, thought you meant the live set. The unreleased songs from the new album will remain unreleased now co writer Simon has left the band.
You missed my Edit (having some trouble now):

Oh ...... well done to BlueHughes for noticing Simon had killed his twitter account a few days ago, so it seems it's not a "oh fork this" type of comment - looks like Simon has thought about it.
