This surge plus winter weather has put our subway system into chaos, again. As a result, I did something I've never done before in 19 years of being a full time pedestrian / public transit rider living here. I declined to go somewhere after dark because I was afraid it wouldn't be safe.
When I went into Manhattan at evening rush hour (which was not very "rushy" due to office workers staying home and MTA staff out sick) Monday it was a total cluster. Sadly, displaced people have gone underground again because 1) it's cold and 2) the shelters are, I'm assuming, raging with COVID cases. This resulted in tons of un-homed people without masks on trains and in stations. There were two VERY agitated men who got on train cars I was in at different stops and were just raging at the tops of their lungs at unseen adversaries. The stations are also full of people sleeping on benches and floors.
Son was sent home with two at-home COVID tests yesterday from school to take at intervals of Day 1 and Day 5 because a positive case was identified in his class yesterday. He doesn't have to stay home (thank the powers that be) unless he tests positive. This is a HUGE improvement from the past two years, where if a case was identified, the whole class had to stay home. Fingers crossed...
OK, I now realize how bad things are here. Endless wails of sirens again. People in our greater circle getting positives left and right. I am announcing a ten-day pause of my business, as it's not safe to be with someone in close proximity for 60-90 minutes at a time right now. Done.

I think, after over 2 years, we have reached the stage where people going to the ED because they have a cold, is now people going to the ED because they aren't sure what they have & it could be covid, but they don't know because farcebook says one thing & the news says another thing etc.. People are scared and I think the most productive & effective thing to do is to try to calm people down. I'm not brushing it off like it's a common cold. Don't get me wrong. After 2 years it's now at a stage where everybody (except the idiot antivaxxers) is scared. Scared is not what we need to be. Calm & sensible is. What you have done looks like a smart, cautious, & measured move. But the most important thing is not to panic & not to panic your clients. It's okay to be scared. That's human. I think we unwittingly project our fear though & that's when it all goes to shiat. It sounds like you're doing the right thing.

I get it, steve, don't worry. What I hate about all the ambulances is all the stress it's putting on hospitals and health care workers. If people are calling ambulances to get a COVID test (which I've heard is happening), then they are taking up resources others may really need.
Panic is always bad but being scared not necessarily. If it comes with reasonable behaviour it's okay.
Probably we all have a slightly different view on what behaviour is reasonable depending on what we are and what we need. I guess we can agree that calling an ambulance to get a test is not if the other way is accessible. I hope that there aren't many people having such a brilliant idea.
@notkristie I think you are doing the right thing, reasonable for sure.
But I don't see And I don't feel But tightly hold up silently My hands before my fading eyes And in my eyes Your smile
I mistook stars reflected in a pond at night for those in the sky.

Thanks, lioness! I just don’t want to provide the virus with a host to help stop the spread. It feels right.
Just received my booster! Happy to report that I got Pfizer again, which is actually surprising since the government is saving them for people under 30.
Holy arm pain Batman! Today, my left arm, underarm and left breast are just aching. Iow - ouchies. Apart from that though (I’m a bit sleepy too) I’m feeling pretty good! IMO A sore upper body is a small price to pay for all the good these vaccines do.
