WMS definitely suffers from the reactions it got when it was released. But you have to remember that Wish was not that well accepted by Cure fans when released: We were all waiting for what we heard on the Play Out video. Nowadays, I think Wish is really over-rated and WMS under-rated. R&R&R is certainly one of the worst Cure song ever, but there are peaks on this that they never reached after. I just think you don't need to be a Cure fan to love Pornography, but you need to be a so-called Cure fan to hate WMS.
Really? I remember Wish being very well received by fans as another Cure masterpiece. Well received by the public too giving the band their highest charting album at number 1. Every song on it is top notch (ok maybe not Wendy!) and possibly their best ever set of B sides.
Noway, Wish was quite disapointing after Disintegration and Play out... All these fat guitars and the shiatty rendition of Wendy Time... The Big Hand was not on it... There were lots of good reason to dislike it back then... All the tracks previously played live were far better than their final versions...

I agree. Cut in particular sounded way better on the T&C recording. I was really looking forward to Wish based on the live recordings but I never really got into it. To me it was an obvious cashing-in on the Disintegration success. Not bad but not really great either and somewhat calculated. I totally hated WMS when it came out but I think it has aged better than Wish. Wish has fewer terrible songs than WMS but WMS has more excellent songs than Wish, if that makes sense. Am I the only person who thinks that Bare is one of the most disarmingly brutal and beautiful Cure songs?
Anyway, I guess what I'm trying to say is that WMS should stay for another round.

I couldn't agree more. I didn't like Wish in 92', i hasn't changed that much. I hated WMS and the 96' tour made me change my mind, it's one of the Cure albums I listen the most now !
I don't remember a single bad word about Wish, it was a perfect storm of post-Disintegration hype
The media reaction was not bad. Young Cure fans who discovered the band a few years earlier liked. Most of the then hard-core Cure fans were more disapointed. Even the Wish tour was, mmmmm... Weak... Take any old song and you will find its worst rendition on the Wish tour...
Round and Round is a horrible song. I always thought if I had to pick my least favorite Cure song it would be that one but then I don't like Carnage Visors (I actually burned a Faith disc without CV so I didn't have to skip it). It's boring and long so in essence If I was forced at gun point to listen to either R&R&R or CV I would listen to R&R&R because at least I know it would be over quicker. There is the real 27. 27 minutes of total boredom.
Carnage Visors is a difficult one. I love listening to it but I really have to be in the mood for it first. Otherwise, I just can't put 27 minutes aside for one song.
Also, someone please come in and save WMS!

R&R&R is truly awful but I still think The 13th is worse. I still remember hearing it on the radio for the first time in disbelief. What were they thinking? But if you swap the singles for the b-sides and skip a couple of tracks you get a good album.
Carnage Visors is just dull but I don't really consider it part of any album.
My vote went for WMS but I'm still not sure. I can't forget the shock I felt twice while listening to it for the first time. First it happened at Want, it literally blew me away. It's one of the most incredible Cure songs, for me a gem. And after that the second shock came, I was so disappointed by almost all the other songs that couldn't really understand how it was possible they were placed on The Cure album opened with something so good as Want. After some time, well, quite a long time tbh, I even liked some of them. Strange Attraction, Numb, Bare, Trap are really good songs, most of the others too. It's easier to point out two which I dislike to this very day: Club America and R&R&R. Certainly, wonderful b-sides also helped me to look at that album more kindly. Love them.
So, I'm not sure if I really want to evict it right now. But Entreat and Paris and simply better, even though they're live albums. Only TIB stays... I'll have to think a bit more. They're so different.
PS. Carnage Visors is great, hypnotizing. I can listen to it over and over.
But I don't see And I don't feel But tightly hold up silently My hands before my fading eyes And in my eyes Your smile
I mistook stars reflected in a pond at night for those in the sky.
