Do they really need to make a boatload of cash from festivals to do a real tour? Bob is a multi multi millionaire with more money that you could ever spend.
I would imagine have that extra cash as padding gives you some more leverage in terms of arranging a tour. Dunno. And I while I doubt any of the members of TC are cash strapped and eating ramen, what's not to love about making some more scratch to do with as you please?
If RS and co. didn't enjoy some aspect of doing festivals, clearly they wouldn't be playing them. I'm sure it's not first and foremost about the $. Wonder what's enjoyable for them about it? Hmmm, they don't have to stand around in the mud, the heat, and use portable toilets.
And as for RS having more money than any of us could ever spend, try me.
I think The Cure likes to get out and play in front of people. And festivals let them do that fairly regularly, without much work on their end. As others have mentioned here, it also gets them some new (and young) fans. So I totally understand why they do these festival tours.
It’s like seeing your friends at a giant party full of people you don’t know, or going to an intimate dinner party. If I could choose between the two, I’d like more intimacy, but hey, sometimes I have to share my friends

I wish they'd get their shiat together and announce the lot - it'd make it so much easier to plan what to do...
But it isn’t only the Cure’s fault we don’t know more than we do.
No festivals in Denmark have announced any names at all, and I think they are busy negotiating, so as much we want to know, I don’t think they know a lot more than we do...
I’m sure that the festivals are eager to get a confirmation, so they can announce as soon as possible...
I’m more and more sure, that they come to Roskilde festival!!!
I understand why they do festivals, they don't have to care about all the asstle of the scenery, as Smith says, they come, they play, they f*** off, easy, and earn big money in the bargain, so they don't have to hurry for another project...
Hurricane / Southside... Too expensive. I still hope for a stand alone show in London. Okay, it's more expensive cos of flights and hotels but nevertheless more fun.
