another vote for ‘bloodflowers’,i think it’s a fine album.i think ‘the cure’ album is finally starting to grow on me too,no idea why it took this long though ha ha
OK, screwjack, can you please humor me and tell me how it's growing on you? What are you finding to appreciate that particular album? Save
i’d always really liked the first two tracks,’lost’ and ‘labyrinth’ and was a bit indifferent to rest of album, but recently i have been listening to it in bite sized chunks on my short walk into work ( only about 10 minutes ) and,for me,it seems to work better as individual songs rather than a full album. i do skip the song ‘us or them’ though, just don’t like it at all

Cool, thanks for explaining that. I don't abhor Lost and I kind of like Us or Them (specifically the bass work, not so much the vocals). Everything else on that album just kind of sounds the same and like shouting to me. The songs all blend into one in my mind. Nothing much distinctive.
IMHO, it seems as though they rarely play any tracks from that album live these days, but I haven't gone back to look at setlists or anything, just relying on my (incredibly feeble) memory. To me this would indicate perhaps the band isn't that keen on the material, either. Save

...I'm not really a big fan of Bloodflowers. I know that's not a popular opinion.

Thanks very much - that’s really helpful, lovekittens - I’ll work my way through your list. I did listen to Bloodflowers when it came out, and didn’t ‘get it’ at the time. Giving it another go and will report back!

i don’t think ross robinsons production helps on this album, its very...’muddy’

Let me know what you think of the songs. I’d be interested in your opinion.
Please don't judge me too harshly, but I have to confess that although I love most of Three Imaginary Boys through to Wish, I've not made the same effort to get to know the last four albums. I'm not proud of it.
I think it was down to a combination of a slightly disappointing live performance after two fabulous ones, not 'bonding' immediately with Wild Mood Swings, and a horrible job I had then which took up my waking hours/listening time for a few years.
Would be great to hear your thoughts on what masterpieces I've missed. I'm not sure where to start in catching up...any recommendations gratefully received.
~Bloodflowers~
(is a classic CURE-sound-album)
The rest ones (Wild Mood Swings-self-titled-4:13) have got some good tunes in them ,some boring stuff as well but ouh well it is THE CURE after all so i think you should give'em a try ,all of them. You will find some gem's, that is for sure. (WANT-Anniversary-Underneath The Stars, for example)
Without starting a new thread, I thought this was the best place to put this. It doesn't quite fit here, but if there's a better place for it, feel free to move it (I specifically didn't want to put it in the thread about Reeves).
In the past two years or so I find myself feeling really nostalgic for vintage TC guitar work. I don't remember feeling that way when I have seen them live since 2016, but so much of what I've heard lately has been 2019 festival shows.
Often, Reeves guitar to me seems a touch too showy and "classic rock." I find myself thinking it just doesn't quite fit in with what I enjoy in TC albums and older live shows in terms of guitar. RS has his own brand of virtuosity, but Reeves at times gilds the lily for me and is flourishy in not quite the right way. It's a little too "jam band." I wonder if this is mostly a function of the types of recent shows.
If an album with Reeves' guitar work comes out, I think there's a good chance he plays a little differently, but maybe not. I'm sure RS has fun playing with him, though, and as long as he likes the sound and is enjoying it, that's the way it will sound.
Reeves is a fantastic player and my opinion doesn't at all reflect my estimation of his skills. It just doesn't quit "go" with what I love about how TC (read RS since he is the band's resident guitar god and creative leader) has always used guitar. I just happen to enjoy the overall sound of RS' and co.'s previous guitar work more, ATM.

Yes, Reeves is a fantastic guitarist with a near-untouchable pedigree, but...
I was thinking this same thing watching Curætion 25 this past weekend. Watching that show for the first time, it struck me how much the focus was (rightly) on RS's guitar work throughout.
I've always said the same. Reeves is a great guitar player, but it doesn't fit for me in The Cure. I just don't like it. I can even say it is tacky in his solos sometimes, sorry.
