No, it is a male tree. They mostly do not sell female trees here for the reason you mentioned (the smell of butyric acid from the fruits).
My tree became for the first time blossoms this year, but no fruits thank god (they are still not entirely open on the photo).

People here are sometimes not great about cleaning the sidewalks of the nuts and then you have to walk through them and the whole block smells terrible. Sometimes you’ll see enterprising people who are used to having them in their diet gathering from the branches before they drop.
I made a jacket for my magnolia seedling, which I think is hardy enough to stay outside and is too big to come in this winter.
The chicken wire is kind of superfluous, but should help keep the coconut husk in place as it degrades and gets moist. I also put down a bunch more mulch.
I need to start working on getting it a home in the ground. It may make it one more year on the balcony, but I want it to be able to take off.
