Soo... 11 films (+ 1 to come), 5 TV shows, 1 animated series. What are your thoughts on this amazing, incredible franchise?
Have you watched them all? What's your favorite series/movie/character? How/when did you discover it? Has it affected your life in some way?
Please share your opinions here!
I'll go first and try to make it short. I cannot recall how exactly I came across ST. I surf the web a lot, and I might have seen references in several places. I'm 23 so obviously it was not very popular among my generation, but one day a few years ago I decided to give it a chance. And it blew my mind off. I'm kind of obsessive with chronological order, so I started from the very beggining, The Cage. First thing I noticed was how elaborated and profound the scripts were. They were trying to send a message. And then the actors, as episodes went by you could feel a comfortable and familiar atmosphere, the internal jokes between them (both the actors and the characters) and the sense of humour just caught me completely. It was tough to get used to a new group of actors each series, luckily the films were there, and you got to see them growing old... I must say, I treasure TOS because of that, I felt I was part of the family there. That didn't happen with the other ones. In story development matters, I'd choose TNG. It has the best storyline ever. The other series are great also, especially DS9.
And regarding the films... Well, The Wrath of Khan, The Search for Spock and First Contact are in my top three for sure.
I don't think I make use of all this time. Oh kill me kiss me once, and then we'll throw it away.
My Dad and older brother used to hog the TV to watch TOS, so (bearing in mind I grew up in South Africa and TV channels were at a (very) bare minimum back in the 1970s) I used to either join them and watch, pester my Mum or go play outside with all the snakes, lizards and miscellaneous creepy crawlies.*
What was funny was that apartheid was still rife in S.A. at the time, so we never saw that espisode where Kirk kissed Uhura or the episode with the half black, half white Cheron. (Separation of races was very much 'real life' in S.A. at the time... Even music by black musicians were banned from being listed in the Top 40. All hell broke loose when Michael Jackson became the number one seller in S.A.!!!)
Uhura was my favourite because she was a pretty girl and did cool stuff. I liked Spock too (still do!!)
I LOVE the new film franchise!! Love it!!
Villain-wise, it has to be the Borg. They are (scarily) AWESOME!!
* OK, I did all of those things anyway!!
The early bird might get the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese.

Interesting story L! Wow, must have been really tough living there with all that going on. ST was revolutionary in that way, the first show that put a black woman working among men (despite the super short uniforms heerm...), that kiss you mention and several other. Personally I can't get used to the new franchise. I just don't get used to thos actors impersonating old characters -________- But I want to see how Sherlock does in the new one!
TOS has lots of great villians I think that should have been given a chance to grow the character (wat? to develop the character or something like that) more in the series, like those kids from Miri, but the best developed of them all is the Borg and yes, they're awesome.
And then is Q. One of my all time favorites.

We have a Star Wars thread, so it's about time we included the other nerdiverse in the mix. I've been busy warping through all the episodes again as I seem to have forgotten much of them & moved country before Voyager had actually finished. I'm currently on Deep Space Nine & enjoying it immensely. But I think it's worth throwing it out there for a bit of nostalgia &, of course, to wonder at the newer iterations of the franchise. Going to throw in a poll to for the hell of it. Which was/ is your Trek of choice? Favourite moments? Best Characters?
Whatever. Just have a bit of a chin wag about Star Trek in all its glory
I've finished DS9 & boy that was an emotional end Onto Voyager now. I missed a lot of these as I spent much of the time gigging & getting really baked.
