Any other Melvins fans here? Whenever they come to NYC we try to see them. It was my son's first concert in utero. Well, I talk a big game, but it's surely not every time they come; we missed 2017.
The last show of theirs we saw was them with Napalm Death back in about April of 2016. It wasn't the best Melvins show I've seen, but I was surprised to like Napalm Death's set. I used to play them as a "sort of" joke on my radio show back in about 1991.
These days I must confess in all my geekiness that Melvins are one of the go-to bands to listen to when I am weightlifting... I must confess I find Buzzo kinda hot. It's the hair and the eyebrows, I think. His hair truly rivals Robert's.
Classic footage from some kind of MTV show circa 1995, hosted by the poor man's Kurt Loder (not that that's saying much).
He introduces the band as "THE" Melvins." And there's a sketch artist who drew them while they were performing. There's even a futuristic comment about "West World."
I think the guys did a really outstanding job of being polite to that tool...
One of those bands that I've always appreciated without really getting into - my Melvins experience begins and ends with Mike Patton (who can do no wrong!)
Here's a great gear interview with Buzzo by Elliott of Little Punk People.
I love this interview for a few reasons:
1) Elliott's mother is wearing a Siouxsie shirt 2) Buzzo is so great in how he interfaces with Elliott. There is no talking down to, even though he's a kid. 3) I don't feel this is an attempt to "get a kid in the spotlight", that is, it doesn't seem exploitative. It just seems this kid really loves this kind of music and is genuinely curious. And he can actually noodle around on a guitar! He has his own opinions and seems knowledgeable. 4) Buzzo isn't afraid to talk smack about Fender and Gibson in terms of how he prefers to work with people who will do custom work for him. ("I couldn't just call up Fender or Gibson and ask them to do custom work" - well, you certainly couldn't, now.)
Curious, how do you feel about this album machavoil? It has grown on me *slightly* after a second listen, but overall I'm a little disappointed. I don't feel like they really leveraged having Pinkus and McDonald both on every track. Or maybe that's just down to the mixing? I don't know. It does make sense as a follow up to Basses Loaded, but I feel like it should have been so much better.
A lot of it also veers a little too much into "straight ahead American rock" territory rather than slacker, stoner metal for my taste. Not enough crunch, grind and dirt for me. That being said, I do appreciate that Melvins still often mix it up after so many years. SaveSave

notkristie It’s definitely not their best album... In terms of songwriting Buzz didn’t do much, he only co-wrote one song with Pinkus... I don’t think there’s another Melvins album with only one song by Buzz, it’s weird! I’m disappointed too, with two bass players I was expecting something else... After listening maybe 20 times to it my favourite songs are Graveyard and Don’t Forget to Breathe. The Beatles cover was way better when i saw them live last year! I’m really into doom, sludge... heavy things... and it’s something that’s missing on their last releases... But live, they’re still heavy as f**k, it’s the reason why îm going to see them again at the end of September... 🙂

Agreed, live they have never disappointed, that I've seen. Enjoy the show in September!
