I used to be a stage manager & spent more hours than I can care to remember in theatres, but I really did love a good musical.
I think my fave of all time has to be Bugsy Malone.
My first stage design ever was for a production of this & I have seen a professional production that was flipping awesome (although not quite as good as the one I did)
So go on. What are your favourites? Annie Get Your Gun? Singing In The Rain?
I was lucky enough to work for the only Marriott Hotel that housed a theatre. (Marriott Theatre at the Marriott Lincolnshire Resort, which is now a Marriott Franchise and why I don't work there anymore).... Needless to say, I got to see a lot of the shows for free because I worked as a server in the restaurants and they wanted us to promote the shows.
I have to say my all-time favorite musical (which I did happen to see at Marriott, but not my favorite version) is Evita. I love, love, love Evita. Second favorite is Les Miserables. I've never seen it though (although I love the 10th anniversary edition)
Like I mentioned, I really only know (aka love) 2 musicals. The Rocky Horror Picture Show because it is the best musical of all time (duh). And Hedwig and the Angry Inch-John Cameron Mitchell will forever be the one and only Hedwig. I think my heart is too cold and tiny to embrace most other musicals. They tend to be so sincere
I was in a musical once, in high school (small part, and only sang as part of a chorus), but I cannot for the life of me remember the name of the play or the plot, haha. I only remember that we sang sixties songs, so it was about bohemians or hippies. I sang "If I had a Hammer" and (look away steve) "I'll follow the Sun".
The old musicals were amazing. Royal wedding was way ahead if it's time too and in regards to gene Kelly on the town I think it was called where he danced with the cartoon. No correction Anchors a weigh
i've seen some. i think movie wise i would have to go with "wizard of oz". magical. i saw a touring version of the theater version of "tommy" that was pretty cool. they made it appear that you were inside of a pinball machine. not my favorite artform though.
Maybe we can get steve to share footage of a musical he was in here
Well, the Old Red Melodramas were all musicals (sort of) & I do have Sherlock Holmes & The Shadow Of The Phantom on my YT channel. A snippet....
But all the other musicals I was involved with entailed me managing the stage or on the tech crew. Local drama companies would often call to ask me to work on their shows. I've been a weapons handler* (Annie Get Your Gun), fly-man (Singing In The Rain & about 2 dozen other shows), sound designer, set designer & director. My old drama teacher & good friend (now deceased) used to run summer drama schools where we put on full-scale musicals (mostly home written) for kids. That got me involved with another company who did something similar, but with known/ pre-written musicals like Bugsy Malone & Dracula Spectacula & so on. They were always a good laugh, except for putting up with the choreographers who were hell bent on ruining things.

Them dance moves tho...
I was on crew a lot in high school theater productions. Loved working on sets...if I had the time I think it'd be fun to do it again for community theater.

Not quite Astaire level are they Working on Singing In The Rain was pretty cool. Especially as the leads all had to learn tap just for the show. But I think the best by far was Return To The Forbidden Planet. We had a Cookie who learnt the guitar just for the role & he seriously blew everyone away with his solo in She's Not There. That is one heck of a fun musical. No-one quite expected it & there was a standby axe man back stage, but he came out & shredded like he'd been born with a guitar in his hands. I went to see a professional production of that too & I still think the amateur one was way better.
I totally forgot that I WAS in a musical! I think I was 15 and it was called My Emperor's New Clothes... I played a townsperson so I was just ensemble. I have a vhs copy floating around somewhere. Oh and I played the Cowardly Lion when I was in Girl Scouts. We didn't sing though - we just danced a long to the original music... and smiled cheesey-like.
My favorite movie musical would have to be In The Good Old Summertime with Judy Garland. It takes place in Chicago in the winter. It is a reboot of Love Letters and You've Got Mail is a reboot of ITGOS...
Speaking of Singing in the Rain... I love Gene Kelley - but I heard he was such a tyrant that Fred Astair ran into Debbie Reynolds who was crying off set and helped her with her dancing. That's such a great story.
