Interesting list. I don't think I'd be able to rank the albums. Too dependent on mood of the day. Nearly every album is a full play through for me. Not something I can say about other bands
Somehow I managed to lose this thread whilst moving some stuff around & as it was an interesting thread I decided to "do a Hollywood" & reboot it. Right.... over to you....again..
for me...
Seventeen Seconds - The perfect The Cure album
Pronography - Marks a difficult point in my life & was my first The Cure album. If I'm listening to it, I'm usually angry or in a very bad mood.
Faith - Simply majestic. Possibly the birth of anthemic The Cure songs
Disintegration - I believe this is more closely related to Faith than Pronography. Doom but romantic doom
The Top - Out & out batshiat crazy. It's like nothing else really
Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me - It has everything on it. Maybe too much "doo doo dooing" but bounces from Sleaze to romance to ceremonial to pop & to ranting. It's all there
Three Imaginary Boys - Makes me feel young. It's alway fresh sounding & to think Bob was only 19 or 20 when he wrote these songs it's amazingly mature.
Japanese Whispers - (Yes. IT IS an album ) A nice middle finger to the puerile pop of the time. Good bit of snark going on there.
The Head On The Door - A rebirth. Alway makes me feel like starting over
Wish - Just sounds perfect. More anthems too & more hopeful
Bloodflowers - More dark romance (yep, I'm a softy huh?) Also some of Roger's best work.
The Cure - Does what it says on the tin. It draws on so much early work & demands to be really listened to
4:13 Dream - Full of promise & great songs. Let down by poor production. But still a great collection.
Wild Mood Swings - Stops my coffee mug making unsightly rings on the table
Okay, maybe I can actually post here if I'm listing on importance, and not favorite (don't make me choose! too hard). Apologies for the long post.
Disintegration-The album where I became aware of The Cure's existence. That voice, those sparkly guitars...it really made an impression. No one does atmosphere like The Cure-I still sink deep in whenever I listen. There are only a small handful of bands/musicians I can remember hearing for the first time, and Lovesong was THE song. That said, as beautiful as Lovesong is, I'm always surprised that it was the best performing single for the band in the US and gets everyone on their feet at a show. It deserves it, for sure, but it still surprises me every time.
Bloodflowers-I have always loved this album, but something clicked in me after I entered my thirties and the emotions just felt the realest they've ever felt.
Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me-Even though Disintegration was my first taste of The Cure, this was my first The Cure album I purchased. I can't remember exactly why I bought it, although I suspect it was because the double album intrigued me. When I was young I used to always skip The Kiss. Unthinkable now, but when I was a teenager I used to love the Cure only for their romance. Now, I can't live without the angst!
Three Imaginary Boys, Seventeen Seconds, Faith, and Pornography-Weird to group these together, I know, but because I discovered The Cure when they were already well established, I heard many of these songs for the first time through my Standing on a Beach compilation. So I supposed in terms of importance, they all sort of entered my life at the same time. That said, the trilogy of Seventeen Seconds, Faith, and Pornography really were not truly appreciated until I was older. They just occupy a different feeling that I did not fully relate to when I was younger. Robert Smith made old soul music from an early age, eh?
Head on the Door-Pop perfection. I might have fallen in love the first time with Disintegration’s opulence, but my glob, The Cure made it look so easy to write brilliantly catchy tunes.
4:13 Dream-This album made me fall in love again. If you wait 4+ years for an album, you want to believe they can bring you back into the fold. For me, this album absolutely did.
The Top-Used to be my least listened to album but it became a regular listen over the past few years. Not sure what exactly happened, but I guess I finally understood the genius.
The Cure-The Cure proving they are one of the most consistent bands of all time. Such a great album without any pomp or circumstance.
Wish-Funny, this was the one album I never bought. I was deep into grunge at the time, and although I enjoyed all the Cure songs I would hear on the radio, I was spending my money on other bands. When I met my partner later in the nineties, he had this album and that's when I finally discovered all the gems that I never heard on the radio.
Wild Mood Swings-I remember buying the album and thinking, who is this? LOL. But seriously, this album is wild. Some great loves and dislikes on this album.
sang, I guess that makes sense. I got Wish for my 10th birthday from my sister (so I stop stealing hers?) and then of course lost it or loaned it and then I had to buy it for myself... then again, I had to buy it... then the cd came out and I had to buy it... then I had to buy it again... then it broke, I still have the broken copy, and I had to buy it again... Wish and I go waaaaay back apparently. I love everything about it, including the name. despite all of that though, it will be at the top of all of my lists.... I need to get a new Bloodflowers too... my copy went to Arkansas on accident.
It's difficult to pick a favourite as their back catalogue is so diverse and varying in moods. I guess if they had to be grouped it would be like this...
8 undisputable classic albums
The Head on the Door Faith Kiss me Kiss me Kiss me Pornography Wish Bloodflowers Seventeen Seconds Disintegration
3 great but not classic albums...
The Top Japanese Whispers Three Imaginary Boys
3 albums that get mixed response
The Cure 4:13 dream Wild Mood Swings
But on any day, quite a lot from that list could be my favourite, even ones in the middle list like The Top and Japanese Whispers
