what if instead of this one we'd had 2 late as part of the Disintegration album concept? Would it have been the same or better? To me this song is the worst in the album (there has to be one! but that doesn't mean it's a bad song, it's a very good song, but compared to the others it would take the 12th position)
When it comes to choosing the songs that will make it to the album, Robert is very careful with the running order and I wonder if he ever considered 2 late instead of this one.

When you say worst in the album do you mean music wise or lyrics wise or both? I'm assuming music. I have often wondered how Robert chooses what go on the albums and what gets cut. Although I prefer 2 late I'm not sure it would fit on Disintegration. A lot of the songs on Disintegration seem to be sad, seedy or filled with hopelessness. Even Lovesong is a little sad "However far away I will always love you" 2 Late does not give me that feeling.
"The moon will change your mind."

I'm with pip on that one. Me too, I love "2 late" but I don't think, it would have fit anywhere on the album while "Closedown" does. To my mind "Disintegration" is just a perfect album and also one that means a lot to me, I really can't imagine any changes there as it's just perfect (running order, cover art etc.).
I mean musically speaking. But not all the songs are sad (Fascination Street, Lullaby...) However, I do think that 2 late has this slightly touch of sadness, poppy sadness. I don't know. Maybe I should listen to the whole album having substituted those 2 songs and see what it would be like. I like the way it is right now, though, it was just a thought.

No worries there, reclevel! I find your input quite interesting and refreshing! Many newbies tend to just post a quick hello and disappear again. So I really like you reviving the lyrics section etc. and of course it's always interesting to read other people's opinions, interpretations and thoughts.

Old thread, but for me the one to drop (if I had to) would be Homesick. Love it, but Closedown is one of my favorites. One of the local stations actually had it in the rotation at the time which was outstanding. I remember hearing it getting ready for school and not believing it wasn't Fascination Street or Lovesong.
As much as I love 2 Late, I don't think it fits on the album. That being said, after hearing it live it should have appeared in live sets sooner, or even been a stand-alone single. I bet if it had been held off and released between Disintegration and Wish it would have been big.
I must say it has grown on me in the last couple of years... no longer the worst song of Disintegration. I don't think there are weak songs on this album, it's flawless, you may like some songs more than others, but that's just normal. The "weakest" song from this album would be a number one hit were it made by any other band...
*I always had the US version. For me the first three songs on this album are like one long aria. They belong together and flow into one another almost seamlessly. The next few songs -- Love Song, Last Dance, Lullaby and Fascination Street -- make up the easier-listening singles. And then the mood falls off a cliff and lands there with the long, tortured laments beginning with Prayers for Rain. I can't imagine this album any other way and think it is part of my brain matter. I have listened to it so often throughout my life. ~Very nice that the Dallas show started off with the Disintegration Aria.
This song really speaks to me. As I write this and look back many years from now I feel like this song captured my feelings perfectly through my waining days of highschool. Just like this whole album it’s self I wanted to do something spectacular before I feel I’m truly old and now everything is coming to a close. If only I could fill my heart with love.
