one of my Favourite Songs. in 1989 the live version was much faster, but from 1995 onwards the slowest version is even more 'poignant and engaging.
This is definitely one of those songs where the line-up of the band significantly changed the arrangement between '89 and '95. My highlight is the '91 arrangement with Porl playing his fast flicky riff for the verses and Boris getting faster and faster during the song - the tempo increasing to match the lyrics until the song actually disintegrates. Since '95 the song doesn't actually get to disintegrate anymore, the verses stay the same speed and the overall pace is slower than the original recorded version which doesn't emphasise the lyrics in the same way.
I'd rate is as one of their top 5 songs, a proper heartbreaker.

just to add... only a genius like Robert would dare include the voice effects he included (like little children as choirs, especially during the line "for the love of the crowds and the three cheers from everyone", just use headphones and turn up!
And of course, every time and S sounds... such details...

I consider this song to be The Cure's absolute masterpiece. Musically, lyrically, sonically- everything. I always interpreted it to be about how everything disintegrates or falls apart eventually- entropy to summarize in a single word.
Another great song that projects my feelings. Everything comes to an end and disintegrates. I especially love the shattering of the glass and Roberts mumbles in the song. The studio album sounds to me like “and now what is this” while during the ‘16 and 40th anniversary it’s sounds like “now we lay in wonderence”. I'll always wonder what he says around the 40 second mark. Unless I ever meet the legend himself I’ll most likely never know. Maybe some day
