The History of Alternative Music

I was going to post this article with map of The History of Alternative Music but then I thought it would be cool to have an entire thread devoted to the topic.
Since I'm the young age of 52 I grew up in the best of both worlds. I have very eclectic taste in music. I don't lock myself in to one genre of music. I have too diverse of a mind to do that. However I tend to prefer Alternative and Classic rock.
As most of you know I am a major Led Zeppelin fan. My world revolved around them even at 8 (when I got my first Zep album) While other 8 year-olds were listening to The Bay City Rollers I was listening to great classic rock artists like Zep, The Who, Pink Floyd, etc... But even in the 70s although he may or may not be considered "Alternative" thanks to my MOM I listened to and watched David Bowie often on The Midnight Special and Don Kirchner's Rock Concert. So even though I didn't really know the full scope of alt music I think I was actually listening to (and enjoying) it even at an early age.
It wasn't until I was about 16-17 that I started listening to punk, goth, new wave etc... probably the first official "Alternative" groups I listened to were The Clash, The Sex Pistols, Blondie, Joy Division and then of course thanks to college radio THE CURE.
