I just seen the date, Happy Paddy's day everybody - Now remember you any excuse bunch that it is not obligatory to drink today - I'm wondering if instead of people writing here hubbypud day doobie doo all day long well it would be interesting to me for folk to write anything that they know of Saint Patrick, or of ancient Irish culture? I know very little of Saint Patrick, but here's the niggling back of the head stuff - The Irish were a very Spiritual bunch of people with a deep belief in folklore and pagan ritual until Paddy came along and Christianised the country - I seem to recall hearing that he had a hard time doing this and is to be admired for his dogged enthusiasm but it is his Anglo Saxon Christianity that polluted the (im)purity of the traditional Irish magical way of being. Anyone think that they know anything about Saint Patrick or the Irish? And without Google this is, just to keep it crazy...
No idea why we celebrate this day so heavily and ignore our own St George's Day. George would behead Patrick in an instant then drink all his Guinness.
I'm not a fan and I do everything in my power to avoid celebrating it. In honor of paganism I wore all black. (I typically do that every day but today I was especially ominous looking)

Ok without wanting to get antsy, patriotic or political I think that the reason the English celebrate St. Patricks day is something to do with Patrick being the English man that tamed Ireland - he was some kind of local English hero and sure you're right Mort, George was a Dragon slayer and Paddy was a faerie killer, they don't really compare in terms of fierceness; but although the Patron Saint I don't think Patrick was all that much of a blessing to Ireland. Anyway everyone I see you're not at all interested in Irish history so let me remember not to mention it next year 23rd April - get it in your diary Mort I'm actually on a Stag do that day - a very civilised walking through English countryside and ending with a meal stag do - no tar and lamposts at all at all.

A lot of English people just seem to use it as an excuse to go out and get tanked on Guinness. Like a lot of celebrations the original meanings have gotten largely lost

Yep that^^^^^^^^^^^^ Only replace English people with drunken Yankees! It's way worse here. There were three with pancreatitis and ETOH levels no less than 8 times the legal limit on my floor alone yesterday. One guy drank so much he fell down two flights of stairs and broke his leg. Oh what fun! haha

I'm 3/4 English, 1/4 Scot but I don't celebrate either St George's or St Andrew's day. I'm not a religious person. All 4 saints are obviously Christian. I'd be a little hypocritical if I celebrated one of their days.
