your name...like ice into my heart...a shllow grave...a monument to the ruined age...ice in my eyes...and eyes like ice don't move...screaming at the moon...as cold as silence...and you never will say a word...this is my name...and a strange day...ever and ever and ever again......
A powerful nihilistic song. Always reminds me of Not Waving, but Drowning, by Stevie Smith. Nihilistic in the sense of nothing can be communicated, leaving you cold. Same idea as the poem. Great song! Maybe Simon will dust off those bass pedals!!
To add to my previous post. The bass 'death organ' pedals really help create the mood. Really great song.
I do love the bass pedals but I also love the sustained keys. When those start I can feel the chills probably because it reminds me of old horror movies! The keys are so simple yet powerful.
I don't like the slowed rythm that is used in concert since the mid 80's. The 82 version recorded in Paris at Studio Davout has a faster rythm that served the song better. And it should have been, in this form, a single.
(Is there a post in this forum where we can discuss about the choice of which song should or should not have been a single?)
But back to the topic.
I've heard that "Cold" is a song about drugs.
For me it's about a broken relationship.
But, Hey, when you're in love, you're addicted to the one that makes your heart beat.
I sse it as someone talking to himself through the mirror about the effects of the break-up.
Of course, the magic line "your name like ice into my hart" that I absolutly adore, is directed to the girl.
I still don't understand this song fully, but i'm trying to interpret it better. I think it refers to someone who's a sex slave. "scarred your back was turned curled like an embryo", could refer to someone laying in bed. "Take another face, you will be kissed again", you will have to sleep with another person. I'm confused though about the lines "I was cold as I mouthed the words", not sure if that's referring to the previous line or what. "I await the next breath", this is the reference to drugs i think. "your name like ice into my heart", my fav lyric but I really don't understand the connection. "A shallow grave, a monument to the ruined age. " The shallow grave could be referring to a bed. "Ice in my eyes and eyes like ice don't move." showing no emotion as if frozen in ice . "Screaming at the moon another past time.", letting out your anger, laying flat on your back? "Everything as cold as life, can no-one save you?", this line speaks for itself "Everything as cold as silence and you will never say a word.", never being able to speak to anyone.
I think it’s about drugs and being addictive to drugs...
But that is the genious thing about a lot of lyrics (and poens) They are analyzable to a point where they make sense for what fits the one who analyzes
If it make sense that they are about sex, then they might ve about sex, and if it make sense that they are about drugs, then they might be about drugs.
If You get an experience that make sense to You, then I don’t think it doesn’t mattet what the author ment...
