One of my favourite Cure lyrics, I really don't know what's about exactly, but I always like a lot the images wich this song evoces. That intro "Hello image. Sing me a line from your favourite song" and "You'll fall in love with somebody else tonight" its really amazing, one of my favourites without a doubt!
Some things in the lyrics tell me it could be a tale of attraction / worship. The person you feel attracted to currently not able to answer your need and desire because of her own worries, the latest not related to the one who loves her.
"You'll fall in love with somebody else tonight" : it is the biggest fear of who adores, a means to protect himself when the feeling is too strong. To escape this suffocating consciousness he projects his fear into the one he adores, knowing she could leave (You reveal all the secrets to remember the end and escape someday). Revealing those secrets could be the classic 'it's not you it's me', and therefore she runs.. it's just a theory
Cure front man Robert Smith wrote this for his wife Mary, who he commonly refers to as "M." This might explain Smith's rather evasive answer to the inspiration for the song: "about a girl..." (Curenews, 1989).
The lyrics are even more cryptic, though perhaps most revealing is the opening line "hello image," which, given what we know about the inspiration of the song, seems to equate Mary with the reflection of Smith himself.
They were having "issues", the song is about the conflict in their relationship. We all know they resolved their issues!

I don't reckon it was about a period when Robert and Mary were having issues. I've known some women in my time and I don't think any woman would like a song talking about interpersonal issues be dedicated to her. That's grounds for divorce!!
Clearly I'm speaking generally as I don't know anything about them or their relationship. But still...
