The playgrounds are now open since we've just entered Phase 2. I want to be happy, but unsure of the risk/benefit analysis here... My kid needs to let off some steam in the presence of other kids after 3+ months, but is it just stupid?

I just posted something along these same lines in the COVID-19 thread. I totally get where you're coming from.
Relieved to have finally continued the assessment process for our son that has been on hold since everything went to hell in March. We have a long road ahead of us, but hopefully this will lead to good things for him and us.

I don’t know all the particulars, but hope everything pans out well for your family!
I feel so gosh darn content today. I took pup out to my friend’s cottage to spend the day with him and his family at the lake. We all had such a great time playing in the water, chatting, eating - it truly was a banner day. And best of all it felt so ‘normal’ , like covid and all the other Shirtty things were the furthest thing from our minds! I’m just so grateful for today.
(Note: bingo went into the lake with me! And yes, I gave him a bath when we got home)
I took my son on a walk to a local bakery and we were sitting outside while he drank his cream soda. A homeless woman I recognized from the neighborhood was having a psychotic break and started insisting my son had taken her keys and demanded he give them back. We tried to get away from her and she chased us. Other people nearby told us to go back into the bakery, which we did. The staff couldn't find the keys to lock the door and the woman started trying to get in at us as me and another woman held the door handle shut. The homeless woman then took out two lighters and started trying to set a fire. Finally the door was locked and we were able to go hide in the kitchen.
After ten minutes the police showed up, then an ambulance. The ambulance crew tried, but failed, to get her to leave for the hospital, so the police just let her go. She walked right down our street. I told the police I wanted to give a statement and they refused. Sure enough, on our walk home, she was standing outside a cafe harassing people, so we had to quickly turn down another street.
I hope she doesn't hurt someone. She desperately needs help. The police suck eggs. Once my husband is home to be with our son, I will go to the police precinct and once again try to insist on filing a report.

There has to be somebody that can be called in to take her to somewhere safe & get the help needed surely.
@notkristie - what a horrible situation. Unfortunately, so many people who struggle with mental health issues fall through the cracks of society and never get help they desperately need. Hopefully this woman will be the exception and get some much-needed medical assistance.
Thanks, steve and Danielle. Yes, above all I want her to get help. This is an illness that is out of her control. It's not her fault, but I fear she might really hurt someone who can't protect their self. I have tried to locate the appropriate contact info for trying to get her help but with budget cuts here from the pandemic, lots of places have cut back.
I also wonder if I am kind of to blame because when my son was with me about two weeks ago I gave her 1/2 of a bagel I bought to eat. She was not having psychotic symptoms then. Thus, she may have recognized us on some level and I may have put my son in danger, inadvertently.
@notkristie let’s hope she gets the help she needs. There’s (At least in this country) a major shortage of mental health resources available to those who need it the most. They often don’t have the wherewithal or means to seek out these resources, and when/if they do there’s an absurdly long wait list to see a mental health professional. I used to volunteer at a centre that helped low income or no income people find the resources they needed - health, schooling, pregnancies, addictions. Most of my clients though sought help to deal with some sort of mental illness. It’s a real crisis in the country.

Yes, homelessness is an emergency, as far as I'm concerned, and too often it's really a mental health crisis. I have always felt pretty safe around the homeless and try to show them they are not invisible and that I respect them and treat them with dignity. It's not their fault they have no home, and nobody should be in that position. It's inhumane.
Sadly, I just called our local public service number because the Dept of Homeless Services web site says that's the right thing to do to try to help someone who is homeless. I was told since she is violent, they cannot send someone out to her. So, there we have it. The police won't help and the Dept of Homeless Services won't help. I will leave shortly to go to the precinct in person. Hopefully, they will take this seriously and accept my making a report. Maybe there are magic, legal words I'm not using to compel them?..
