On June 4 1976, four young men from ruined, post-industrial Manchester went to see a Sex Pistols show at the Manchester Lesser Free Trade Hall. Inspired by the gig that is now credited with igniting the Manchester music scene, they formed what was to become one of the world's most influential bands, Joy Division.
Over thirty years later, despite a tragedy that was to cut them off in their prime, they are enjoying a larger audience and more influence than ever before, with a profound legacy that resonates fiercely in today's heavily manufactured pop culture.
Featuring the unprecedented participation of all the surviving band members, this film examines the band's story through never-before-seen live performance footage, personal photos, period films and newly discovered audiotapes.
A fresh visual account of a unique time and place, this is the untold story of how four men transcended economic and cultural barriers to produce an enduring musical legacy, at a time of great social and political change.
For anyone oop North, there is a play about Joy Division & the history of Manchester touring in May. Dates & info
New Dawn Fades is the story of a band, it’s also the story of a city. Join ‘Mr Manchester’ Anthony H. Wilson as he takes you on a journey of myth and magic through the history of the world’s first industrial city, meeting the people who emerged from that landscape to form one of Manchester, and the world’s most Iconic bands – Joy Division
“New Dawn Fades is a spellbinding and brilliant play about one of the greatest bands of all time…I totally urge anyone left out there who believes in music to be so much more to go and see it”
I would love to be there for that. However, I'll settle for seeing them play here in the US in May, also a Joy Division set with a new order opening act.

This one nearly snuck under the radar. Joy Division have launched their own website & will be releasing remastered 180g vinyls of their back catalogue plus extras.
Interesting, Thank for the post. I saw a tweet from Peter Hook stating he was disappointed in the site, as the record lable has created it on their own, with no collaboration or consulting with he, or New order. I don't know if that accurate, but new re-issue vinly would be great! ALso, have you checked out Peter Hooks live 3 cd set of his version of every Joy Division song ever performed?
Yeah, the site's not too clever. You have to scroll all the way down to see stuff & the side bar isn't very obvious to pull out either. On the remasters, it's just the 2007 remasters but on heavy vinyl. Hopefully they'll develop the site more. That's usually the way.
