Thirty years ago today I saw The Cure for the first time. Here are some memories of that day (sadly no pictures of me with my permed mullet and tie-dye skirt )
Fantastic..Elephant fayre was one of the first bootleg tapes I ever got.
I should listen to it tonight really! Shame I didn't think of it earlier, it's getting a bit late now ... Plus I would prefer to be all drunk and maudlin for it, and I can't manage that on a Tuesday these days

I had my 25 year anniversary last December, made a night of it..haha
wilgy, how was that 1987 show? ohfuchsia, that's very courageous. I would definitely keep such stuff.. and probably frame it

It was great, although I have to confess that I was so excited about it that I kind of dont remember it so well. I've been quite lucky that it was recorded for radio so a lot of it is available to listen to in good quality..which I do on December 6th every year

Oh yes! It still gets played on Radio 6 live music hour quite a lot, I didn't twig it was the same one.
I saw The Cure live twice--once in Philadelphia in 1989, and then again in Philadelphia in 1992. My seats in 1992 were much better, but the 1989 show was more mind blowing. The Prayer Tour was my first time seeing them, and I was at the height of my obsession with them. My friend and I had a garage sale to come up with money to help pay for our tickets and travel expenses (I lived in a small town, and we had to drive several hours to Philadelphia for the show, spend the night there, and then drive back the next day). One of my pen friends from the old Other Voices fan club met up with us and we all drove out together. We met some other OV friends at the show. I'm not sure Shelleyan Orphan actually performed that night as we arrived at the venue very early but did not see their set. The opening of the show was so sweeping... when I hear those opening chimes of "Plainsong," particularly in live recordings from the Prayer Tour, it still makes me shiver. I screamed my lungs out during the show and cried so hard during The Same Deep Water as You that I was starting to hyperventilate and my friends were a bit worried about me. At the time, that song was very personal for me. After that I was just entranced. There were lots of songs I didn't get to hear live that would have been special for me, but it's so hard to complain. It was wonderful and was a tremendous highlight of my young life.
My memories of the '92 show are fond if not quite so magical. My friend drove me to the show in his car. I think he had a crush on me even though I was dating another friend of his (who did not join us). We bumped up his car a bit on the way and then he kept flirting with me and bit me on the shoulder before the show. Once again there was no opener--strange. The show was good--of course, but felt a little more business-like. The Prayer Tour show had felt more urgent and emotional--it had seemed like they were putting absolutely everything into it, as though it could in fact have been their last go, as Robert had hinted it might be (and even though we all knew he'd hinted that before, there was still a tension about it). Still, even without that emotion, I was thrilled to get to hear In Your House and Primary, and From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea was as excellent as I had imagined it would be live.
The Cure came to the Orlando area in 1992, but I missed it. We didn't have social networking then, I didn't even know they were playing. I think I went to see Metallica (on their 'Black album' tour) and Van Halen that year.
A long dry spell, and then they returned to Florida in 2008. I recorded the Tampa show, and danced my way through the Sunrise (Fort Lauderdale) show. Hearing "If Only Tonight We Could Sleep" and "A Forest" live was sheer ecstasy.
Great to meet so many fellow Cure fans. I'm sure many were just casual listeners who might know 3-4 songs. But what a feeling to share that experience with so many.
the first time i saw the cure was 1990. no internet, no social media that time. i wanted to see the cure 1989, i was 16 years old, and they played one day after my birthday in vienna. i wasn´t allowed to see them, by my parents. my father was shocked, as he saw, which band i love. because of roberts make-up and his hair. and i never forget, as he said" now i am like my dad. he was shocked, as i was a fan of little richard". but i was to young 15/16 to go alone to vienna to see a concert, for them. 1990, i heard that they will play in innsbruck/austria by hazard. i tried really hard to get a ticket. at the time, no internet, no social media. only telephone the great day in 1990. with a special cure train, we got to innsbruck. waiting at the railway station, a little child was afraid by us, all wearing black, and asked his mother, what happened. she didnt know it. on the train we got into a really big black party. drinking, laughing, talking at innsbruck, we got up to mountain, to the ski-jumping arena. never forget, i got a beer from an american girl, and i just sung "siamese twins"
it was a big moment. all waiting for the cure. how will it be, to see them live. then they began with "shake dog shake" the whole crowd started to move. it was fantastic the best moment at this concert was, as the started with "the same deep water as you". the approaching thunder was not from the tape, it was liv from nature, and it started a thunder at this moment wet and happy
I saw their show 10 times... but 2 of them were (and always be) unforgertable...
1. Szeged, Hungary, 26/08/2005
We waited for show in festival area maybe from 2pm ... and suddenly we heard familiar guitar riffs from main stage side... someone told to us, that The Cure already played on main stage. what??? And... that was truth... Jason, Simon and Porl stayed od stage, from time to time they played some melodies.... soundcheck... what a moment!!! few minutes after that Robert came in!!! That was something! They played a bits of Fascination Street, Let's Go To Bed, Signal To Noise, Hot Hot Hot, Inbetween Days, Primary, Lullaby, Never Enough, The Figurehead, Catch, If Only Tonight We Could Sleep, It's Not You, Jumping Someone Elses Train ... right after that guys came to fans (without Robert of course) for some photos and signing... very nice moment
2. St. Polten, 18/08/2012
Can´t remember which show on main stage I watched when my friend called me, that Roger and Simon were in the crowd... they walked through area and funny thing was that they stayed very close to hardcore Cure fans (Robert´s copy) without any notice! So I walk to them, asking for a photo and had a little chat with Roger... few minutes after that we stopped them again for a signing on our national flag, another photos, chat... Jason came later... of course I´ve got a photos with them, but... i´m quite shy to publish them...

I saw both of these shows as well as 3 other 1992 shows the same year the other Philly show,, Burgettstown and Uniondale. And I can honestly say they were all awesome! But yes 1989 was a show to remember!
1. In december 1989 wrote Prague students to Robert a letter, in this letter was:.....and imagine Robert if the song "Faith" will sound up to the Kafka´s Prague...... And in summer 1990 The Cure arrived in Prague. It was my first big concert and best show in my life until today. I was 19th, and I was there with my friend and his little sister. Because he was small I took she to my shoulders and will dance with she all 2,5 hours. Great show, great, great, great..... Video from this show take me back everytime. 2. In november 1996 in Prague was The Cure tired, I think. Not too much good show. I was little dissapointed. Now what I can listen bootlegs from 1996 I must say – Prague was maybe only one bad show in 1996 – what a shame. 3. In summer 1998 – Brno, Sun festival. - I was a new father – I wasn´t at this show – I had better show at home. 4. Prague, April 2000 – great hypnotic show. After this show I start interested in bootlegs, because I wanna get recording of this show. So I start trade Cure bootlegs. 5. Budapest, summer 2002. I haven´t no recording for next trades, so I must recorded some Cure show. I had new MD recorder and stereo microphone. I started to study setlists from this year and find the moments when the cure must changed guitars, then I trained to change MD in recorder so fast as it was possible – I remember thet my best time was 13 seconds. I take 3 friends to this way. This was crazy and hard journey, the first tone started rain and for the whole concert I must care microphone, I stayed as a stone and after show I was very tired – but after this show I was very good recording and I was very happy. 6. Hurricane festival 2004 – first listen now songs from new album. Nice show, but too short. In Germany is one stupid rule – curfew. The Cure played only one encore with one song (going nowhere) and they must close the show.... 7. Prague, february 2008, great show. The Cure enjoyed it and we also. Beautiful, long, hypnotic show. And my best audio recording on Hi-MD. I had one Hi-MD recorder and bought second. In show I changed not media in one Hi-MD recorder, but Hi-MD recorders on one microphone. - good system. 8. 2011 Reflections in London – great experience to heard all old songs. Good audio recording and at finally multicam from huge stuff on youtube. Never forget..... 9. Hurricane festival 2012 – nice show, “the same deep water as you in encore”... but short show – the same problem as 2004..…..Germany. I had new Full HD camera and I whole show, but I was very tired so I had problem with stability of my pictures – mainly in second half of show (100 years is good only for headache). And near me was one girl what still call to phone. She want to be louder than The Cure. Maybe I should hit she the camera...... 10. I want to make better recording, so I bought monopod and went to Frequency festival 2012. This was journey for one night – at he evening I arrived and after The cure Show I back home. At this short time I meet my friends which was there, we meet with The Cure fans from Slowakia and we together meet Jason, when he listened to Bloc Party. This concert was the nice and longer than in Germany, but in Austria have the same rule as in Germany – so the cure must stop the concert earlier than they want to. But I did good recording and I was not alone. From my stuff and stuff from other tapers I made multicam of which I am proud. - You can download it on Plastic Passion Torrent Tracker (17 seconds page.) - I thought that I never make something better. 11 and 12. - Teenage Cancer Trust 2014 – both shows. I think, that we all expected two different shows – but Robert surprised us again. Nevermind. Two similar shows – that means more good audios and videos. Great opportunity!!!
