Are you thinking the music is recorded or that it is not The Cure playing? Probably Phil on bass and Andy on drums yes? I would say Robert, Phil, Lol, Andy. Because didn't Simon leave in 1982?
No no no.. I was thinking the music is a playback, and Robert singing over it (some kind of karaoke). Definetly is not Simon on the session: he left the band in June 1982. I think Andy met Robert in the Glove sessions... Phil made his debut live in 1983 (I'm not sure about exactly date).
Only Robert and Lol on this session, I think. A drum machine, Robert doing everything and Lol doing the rest...
Yes, I think so too. But it still remains a mystery a little bit to me. For the arrangements, especially on Ariel, are a little bit hard to handle only for one man, even for Robert.

In fact I wonder if Derek Thompson was brought for the bass already on this session played on 24 October 1982, or he was just collaborator later, in 1983.

These were studio sessions, not live sessions, so no need for extra musicians. For the ORS, The Cure were asked to play so they had to built up a new line up for a live performance, which led to the short 1983 tour.

Yes, I agree that he was inclined to do some things alone during those "dark" days. Even before this session, and also after (for The Top). Unfortunately, the sources for confirmation are pretty scarce. I think already around Ten Imaginary Years Robert was not so prone to remember the dates and names from 1982-1983 era so precisely. Not even to mention if today he is able to recall everything from 1982. The fact is that he already at that time spent much time with Steven Severin. They collaborated for Lament together a little bit earlier, aren't they? And they started the tour with Banshees together already in November 1982. Perhaps Severin was around for this session also, to get along a little bit more for upcoming trip. Some musical inputs seem to be in place there, drawing the line further towards Glove.

The Kid Jensen sessions, as well as the Peel sessions were not necessarily live sessions. Some were played live, others were studio sessions, some were live with overdubs. On most of The Cure sessions, you can notice Robert doing backing vocals, so no real possibilities to do it live.
Now about this particular session, listen to One Hundred years and you'll notice that the song, including the voice, fades out at the end, so it can't be played live !

I agree that this was not live session, but still I am not sure that Robert was there alone when it was recorded. And the role of Lol is always doubtful, for you can not be sure that he was always with such a "limited range", like Robert claimed much later. I still suspect that Severin was around.

I was joking about Lol... He certainly plays some keyboard here. He was already playing keyboards on One hundred years during the Pornography tour ! About Severin, his only known colaborations with The Cure are the Flexipop version of Lament and the Riverside performance of Siamese Twins. I personally doubt he was playing on this session. As this is a studio session, only a drummer could have been needed, but as all these songs are recorded with a drum machine...
By the way, I'm very glad to see people talking about The Cure's music instead of the colour of Simon's socks !
