From Montevideo, the band head back 1640km (about 1.2million Ultra Spitfires) west to Chile, once famously mispronounced by Robert’s hero, Jimi Hendrix.
Chile’s capital, Santiago is situated in a giant bowl & surrounded by a famous mountain range which, I have discovered, has its own story.
Mad Andy, who drinks in the Fox & Hounds after a massive bender one night awoke the next day to find himself in a park in the middle of Santiago. No-one’s sure how, but rumours are it was a mix up with his uber driver who was unaware “Chi” was short for Chichester and his satnav auto selected Chile.
While in the city Andy, unable to find a Starbucks , opted for a coffee with legs. He was somewhat taken aback, as the Santiagovians were taller then he expected after assuming the dog houses in the park weren’t for the residents, but for the some 160,000 stray dogs that roam the city so that they have somewhere to watch netflix out of the rain.
He decided to take a wander to shake off the hangover & was swept off his feet at the sight of the mountain range backdrop to the city. He asked a local what they were called, to which the reply was ,”Déjame en paz, bicho raro!”
Believing the range to be previously undiscovered, he planted a flag with his name on declaring them to be Andy’s mountains. The selfie he posted on instantgraph quickly went viral & the city authorities, looking to promote themselves globally, agreed to adopt the name, albeit with a minor spelling change to make it sound more in-keeping with the local culture. That famous flag is now preserved in a locked metal cabinet in the basement of the Chilean parliament building. Legend has it, Mad Andy still gets royalty cheques every time the Andes appear on TV or radio.
Fans pouring in to the city today will be looking forward to a magnificent show in the country’s largest football stadium, but ahead of the event, they will chow down on some pastel de choclo with a side of Tamango Humboldt (named after the penguins).
