No disrespect! I too like the song, but when people talked about it after making its debut live in 2008 they set the bar too high, and I don't think it was that much... but I still would love to see it live!
I think this song is a reminder as to just how small we all are in the scheme of things & yet whatever we do is etched in time & space forever.
Just a shame it's a recycled Uyea Sound really.
I have no problem with drawing inspiration from your own work. The creative path often regurgitates small parts again. I enjoy reading your opinions Steve!!
I have no problems with it either. Pink Floyd do it all the time What does irk me is the fact Uyea sound was perfectly okay as it was. UTS isn't bad, but the production has foregone any consideration for dynamics & focused on getting it as loud as possible (as with all of 4:13, which is why I can't listen to it as often as I'd like to). But then that's a different discussion really.
The song itself is quite sentimental & I think the brevity of waves breaking is perhaps a hint at the brevity of anything really, but then it alludes to how it will be there always, no matter how brief.

What I like to see/hear is parts developed from demos, ideas then realised into a finished song. Not taking parts from a finished article.
4:13 certainly suffers from merging on the same plane, lacking the dynamics , atmosphere and space.
Never really considered the song to be sentimental, I considered Robert to be embracing the beauty in the situation. I find his existential songs interesting, seeing how he feels change, from A Forest , Faith , Pornography ... Bloodflowers, to this.
Spinning round and round with you, watching shadows melt the light so shining. From our eyes a tear,
is pretty sentimental. Romantic even
Haha!! Touché !!
Spinning round and round with you Watching shadows melt the light Soft shining from our eyes Into another space Is ours alone tonight Watching shadows melt
agree with romantic!!! the lyrics are somewhat different on this page..
