Got a sneak peek of that song live last year... wow. Just wow. I was leaving to catch my train and would have given ANYTHING to stay... Darn it!
You had to leave a show while it was still going?? Absolute torture!
I also love this song and feel it's meant for those of us who still hunger for more in life as we get older. Possessions are nothing but the accumulation of stuff. Certainly rings true for me at least.

I know... I feel this great longing inside my heart every time I hear about a live performance... You sound like Robert Smith, talking about Possession. I agree. Besides, stuff you can lose. It´s really memories that count in the end, right? And persons, if you´re lucky.
I've been repeating this song from a recording of the last night of the Lost World MSG shows. I think I've heard it once live before, but I'm too lazy to check. I never listen to 4:13 so I don't think I've properly appreciated how great this song is before.
It got me thinking about the mythology of the hungry ghost and wanting to know more. I started with this Wiki page:en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hungry_ghost
I had fun imagining what the specific types of hungry ghosts would look like, as described on the page according to Nyāyānusāriṇī (a Buddhist text I think, from a cursory check). For example:
needle hair (針毛鬼): These ghosts have bodies made of hair, firm like spears. They are unapproachable. Their insides burn, as a deer shot with a poison arrow. They run about suffering from ulcers. Only small quantities of impure food can allay their hunger.
or
needle mouths (針口鬼): These ghosts have bellies as vast as mountain valleys. Their mouth are like the hole of a needle. Even if they find food or drink, they cannot consume it. Thus they suffer from hunger and thirst.
But as it turns out, we don't have to imagine what they look like! There are Hungry Ghost scrolls at the Kyoto Museum! We actually went to that museum in 2011 but knew nothing about the scrolls. If (when) we go back I will definitely check them out.
Learning about the diet of these hungry ghosts on the Wiki page actually clears up something that has been a mystery to me since I was 19 or 20. I went to a show in DC at the 9:30 club (anyone remember that place?) and it was maybe something like an industrial show, I can't remember. But before the band went on, they played this horror movie that I think may have been Korean. Part of what I remember was this ghost in chains pulling a coffin through the streets. But then the ghost ate some puke on the street. It was so gross and I always wondered WTH, but now I get it!!!!
