Oh, I love JW. Personnaly, i 'see' it as a short album. A short LP, if one can say. Still, you said it all, different studios, different bands, no intention to create a full length LP in the first place, it's just 'three one-offs' put together for Christmas... So for once i disagree with steve...
From Smith himself. When the Deluxe Remasters of The Top, THOTD, and Kiss Me came out, fans could write comments on the official site, and I wrote that I somehow regretted that there wasn't a JW Deluxe Edition too (which could have included 'mr pink eyes' by the way), and Smith himself replied that it was not an album, just a compilation of singles, and with 'mr pink eyes' being available on JTD, I could compile my own JW remastered cd.
What a great time to find this thread after Carrie Keegan letting the world know how JW is her favorite album... I once got into an "argumemt" with whatshisname from cof about it being an album.. While it is classified as a compilation, it's an album in my heart.

Not an album, definitely compilation in my mind. Besides, wasn't it supposed to be released only in Japan since the singles weren't released there, but Fiction decided to release it everywhere? Or have I completely misremembered that?

I know it's been said before but a compilation is a type of album. 😉😘

Given that there isn't one agreed upon definition of "album", the answer is a resounding "Yes, by (lack of) definition Japanese Whispers is an album." (Har har har, see what I did there?) You'll see what I mean.
2) a collection of several pieces of music, made available as a single item on a CD, the internet, etc.: Have you heard their new album?
From www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/album (mind you, M-W just acknowledged that "irregardless" IS a word, so maybe take what they say with a grain of salt....)
album noun: one or more recordings (as on tape or disc) produced as a single unit
From www.collinsdictionary.com/dictionary/english/album 1. COUNTABLE NOUN An album is a collection of songs that is available for download, or as a CD or record. You can also refer to the CD or record as an album. "Chris likes music and has a large collection of albums."
From www.dictionary.com/browse/album a) a record or set of records containing several musical selections, a complete play or opera, etc.: Her album of folk songs will be out next month. b) the package or container for such a record or records: The album has a pocket for each record. c) a collection of audio recordings released together as a collected work: The digital release of their debut album sold more copies than expected.
So, if by "album" you mean a bunch of songs that an artist goes into a studio session (or sessions) with an aim to create or put down songs that are intended to be viewed (listened to) as a whole then no, Japanese Whispers is most definitely not an album.
Conversely, if by "album" you mean a collection of music that appears on a single release (regional and extra/missing track versions included as "the same album" because those sorts of logistical and region-based release rights are a different thing altogether (I'm talking to you The Cure from 2004) then, yes, Japanese Whispers is most definitely an album.
So, contrary to what those examples in the paragraph above state, an "album" is not a recorded piece of work wholly excluding compilations, live releases, best-ofs, deluxe re-releases, remixes of pre-released full recordings, remix compilations, and any other iteration of bunches of songs on one release, it is in fact, all of those things in this sentence.
Ergo, until you can prove that the word "album" excludes things like compilations an live releases, Japanese Whispers is an album.
Even though, to me, it is not.

It's kind of disingenuous to counter the argument that it is not a studio album with reasons it's an album at all. It's just being wilfully contrarian. Japanese Whispers is as much an album as Standing on a Beach is, and as much as Join the Dots is. But not as much as Pornography or The Top is.
