It's getting less and less. I'm waiting for the next journalist to announce they're about to release their first debut album.
As far as I'm concerned, the cure currently have released 14 studio albums.
Japanese Whispers is a compilation, not a studio album.
It's actually both, compilation and a studio album. But this journalist thinks they've only released 12 full studio albums so which cure album is he dismissing? Maybe a wms hater!
It's a collection of songs all recorded in a studio. By definition it is an album. Concert, Show & Paris are also albums. Just because they weren't recorded in a studio doesn't make them any less so.

People have attempted to argue this point before, but it’s not valid.
Look on any discographical website and you will see that albums are divided by studio, compilation and live albums.
The Cure did not go into the studio and say “Now we are recording our new album called Japanese Whispers” in the same way that they did with Faith for example.
The reason I include Japanese Whispers as a studio album as well as a compilation album is because it contains all songs that had never been released on an album before. A bit like Michael jackson's Bad album where every track got released on a single too! Whereas the Boys Don't Cry album contained a lot of songs that were on the Three Imaginary Boys album.
In some ways Japanese Whispers is the most important album they ever released. Up to that point they had been releasing post punk/darkwave music.
Japanese Whispers was the first album showing the cure experimenting in other music styles, pop/jazz/electronica, incorporating lots of different instruments, the most diverse set of songs to date.
The success of Japanese Whispers gave the band the confidence to try any genre of music leading to varied styles on The Top, Head on the Door, Kiss me.
Oh and it flows beautifully just like regular cure album, just a shame Mr Pink Eyes wasn't on it. I don't know why the song was left off the album. They could have added Ariel if they'd recorded a studio version. That would have fitted well on the album.

I agree. Plus, the band appear to consider it an album (unless I'm counting wrong).
So if it's good enough for them, it's good enough for me.

I think Robert classes Japanese Whispers as a compilation album rather than a studio album too. Hence why 4:13 dream has 13 referring as the 13th cure studio album

So I did count wrong. Oh well, never mind then.
The 82/83 singles got me into The Cure and Japanese Whispers was the first new 'album' for me.
So it's always held a special place and I still love it (album or not).

Exactly the same for me the fantasy singles and Japanese Whispers was my introduction album. Then a friend goes "have a listen to their previous album, pornography"
I'm like WHAT THE HELL!! this can't be the same band!! It was a big shock after getting used to their Japanese whispers feel.
Then the next LP I heard was boys don't cry, another what the hell, and I was even more confused at what sort of band the cure were!
Faith then seventeen seconds wasn't quite the shock after knowing pornography.

Exactly the same for me, too. Hearing Pornography after Japanese Whispers was certainly an eye opener.
