Can we talk about The Cure Videos

I'm not sure which is worse the abundance of taxidermy in love cats or the dripping phallic symbolism in love song. But I digress, I always thought hot hot hot was clever, I love primary, other voices , just like heaven and of the new ones I really like the video for alt end. The cinematography is great. Videos I wish they would have made ....like cockatoos, all I want and I absolutely have an amazing idea for the snake pit. I picture the band members melting in a lava lamp firey haze just swirling down infinitely as the music sinks

Boys Don’t Cry and Close to Me will always be two of my favorite videos. And the sock song of course, especially the part where Robert falls down and the sock kicks his bum Just absolutely love The Cure at their playful best. But I do appreciate the smolder in the Fascination Street video.

Two in one day?! That's a long day. I can't imagine. Granted, it's not as if there's a lot going on in those...

When I see videos from '80 & '81 I have to laugh because they're so entirely devoid of any dramatic flair or confidence. Robert wasn't quite "something enough" to be as comfortable in front of the camera, in a video at least. Not to mention the "fake playing / fake singing." I think they forgot to practice their trust falls (ubiquitous drama class exercise in the U.S.) before the shoot.

Agreed, this is also one of my favorites for the same reason. I guess Robert was playing a lot of football back then? Lots of running. Good cardiovascular capacity.

I like that it's very distinctive but also minimalist. They didn't go overboard.

I feel kind of creepy saying this, but, um, I don't think one can ignore the secondary meaning / imagery related to that spider in the video in regards to this turn of events at the end. Many men spend their lives trying to crawl back inside that place from whence they came.

Yep, since those weren't the first videos from the band I saw, they just don't hold the same place in my heart. I didn't own the album until many, many years after its release and I only like a handful of the songs, so not the same thing for me as pre-WMS vids.

All I can say is thank God there is no video for Round & Round & Round!

Have some time to pick through the video timeline and think about this question. Good thread, cradlehag.

Here are the videos I like enough to put some thought into. I don't really ever watch anything after these that isn't live and some of the later official videos I haven't bothered to watch at all.

The Hanging Garden - Yes, it looks dated, but I love the setting. Contemplated doing a tour of places in TC videos last time we were in London, but those gardens would have been super tricky to get to via train.

LGTB - I like this one on a few of accounts. I like Robert's ill fitting, layered pink sweater. I like that you can see more of his personality. And I like the fact he slyly included his love's name in the video.

The Lovecats - Love the setting / lighting / costumes / props. I love seeing RS play with kittens and beads on the floor. And I do indeed love taxidermy.

Boys Don't Cry - I love this video visually. I like the addition of the animation. I like RS' happy dancing. As a mum, I like seeing the young boys.

The Caterpillar - Beautiful setting. I like Robert's clothes and makeup. Hey, it's Andy Anderson!

In Between Days - Everyone like this one, don't they? So many reasons.

Killing an Arab - I think this was the first video I ever saw from TC, but not positive. Despite the seeming lack of context and story arc in this video I find it really captivating. Has to do with the color, the setting, and the old man. I would love to sit down and have a beer with him and find out what he's like. I actually did sit down with an old man in a knit fishing cap in a London pub once randomly (fittingly, his name was Leslie). I kind of imagined it was this guy.

Just Like Heaven - Robert on his knees in leather pants is enough reason for me to love this. The inclusion of the person he's most comfortable with in the world is also really special. 

Lullaby - I'm a bit bored of this one, now, but I do like the set, costumes, makeup. Seems like it would have been fun to make, on some levels.

Pictures of You- I find the snow and polar bear endearing.

Never Enough - More of Robert on his knees. I like the twisted sense of humor and seeing the band in alter egos. This must have been pretty a pretty expensive shoot. Their backs and necks must have been *killing* them after pretending to play on that tiny stage for hours. I appreciate the chance to see RS in black lipstick vs. red. I dig it.

Cut Here - Such a simple video, but it fits the song perfectly. The band's clothing is something you could see if they were paying their respects at Billy MacKenzie's funeral. This will always be one of my favorite songs from TC, based on RS caring enough to write the song. It seems you can tell how he feels from seeing his face in this one.
