We received an email with an address in the UK where we can send the items and get a refund. However I have decided to keep both dress and mug (using it in the office). And I am thinking of asking someone with a sewing skills to make this dresso-shirt smaller.

FWIW, I think it would be difficult, even with sewing skills, to save the shirt/dress. Just something to consider... If it does work out, though, post a picture!
just for general information, the director of bsi merch told me that they have no influence on the product management of the cure merchandise. in her own words “the design, range and ideas are not down to us to decide. this is decided by the band / their designer and management”
so bsi is actually trying to deal as best and fair as they can with the whole situation.

been also thinking what to do with the “dress”, either nightshirt which is a bit of a shame or just with tights and docs, channeling the timeless xxxl-look

That's a real cop out. For sure the design is coming from the band. It's under license, so that makes sense. But the quality of printing & what it's printed on is completely in BS merch's hands. If The Cure finished a record (stop laughing) & the pressing plant stamped the master onto a sheet of kitchen roll, who is at fault there?

a) It would look amazing. b) I wouldn't be surprised if Nick Cave had that as actual merch. c) I'd have thought there are manufacturers in between the band and the outlet, someone's not been doing their quality assurance....

Yeah, what I imagine happened is something along the lines of The Cure/their management makes a deal with BSI to produce their merch and hands them the designs they want, BSI gives them a list of items they can produce and TC/management picks what they want, BSI orders samples (eg a t-shirt, a mug and a patch to show the various print qualities) from their suppliers or more likely already has samples with generic designs that are then given the okay from TC/management. So far all good, but then when things actually go into production there's either a mishap and/or no second quality control of every single item that comes from the suppliers and we have the mess that we ended up with. Judging by their tweet that you posted, my guess is that something changed from the initial samples to the actual production of these items.
All that said though, BSI has handled the mistake rather nicely in my opinion as all it took was an e-mail and I was refunded the next day for both the 'dress' and shipping.
