The way this song is subtlety merged together is really impressive. Take the intro. Roger's piano kicks in at the fifth note of the All Mine riff. At the same point of Robert's Fender riff the "thunder" appears. I love the interplay of these throughout, the light delicate "rain" key sounds contrasting against the main thunderesque bass riff. Thought I'd share...
I like the guitar growl at the very beginning. It's not like that on the album, only on some live versions. I also like the version I just posted in Play for Today.

Really love that wip mix version!! The instruments are much more distinct, love the bass sound, the 'rain drops' piano is particularly beautiful too! Not too sure about the break/gap in the drums?!? Sadly don't have the alternative rarities . Thank you for sharing Pipperoo! Favourite live version/s Pip?

There is a nice guitar growl at beginning of the 1996 Carhaix version. I love the 1996 Vancouver version. Sacramento 1996. I think they started doing that growl in 1996 but I could be wrong. The 1989 versions don't have the thunderous growl like the 96 versions. I think those start with a single note and piano parts then guitar. There is 1 that has a loooong growl at the beginning and now I can't remember which one it is. haha So pretty much all of the 1996 versions I like best.

I have only seen a version from New York City and one from Paris in 1996. Wanted to track down the change in bassline. The former having the '89 original. The latter the evolution. So, appears to have happened on the swing tour... Not too sure if the guitar growl is on these? Perhaps you could point me to a video example? Really love the Teenage Cancer Trust version from last year. The backing tape? of a turbulent wind is a good addition, and the way the main drum pattern interlaces with the bass is interesting too.
When I saw them do this at Wembley in 89 I nearly wet myself.
I think one pretty accurate description would be ethereal
Ethereal is very apt, the studio version is immense, Prayers For Rain and The Same Deep Water ... are the perfect duo, they compliment each other greatly.
This is in my all time top ten BUT it's also one that just doesn't do it for me live. Even with the big long note ...
This is an interesting point. The album version is soft, poetic, even reflective in nature. Where as live, it's raw and cathartic. Which one is definitely mood influenced!
I always get the feeling of how he sings about the way the drugs destroy him, and the rain is the cleansing... And the “you” is the drugs... But this might be too obvious though?...

I thought it was about an entrapping relationship.
If you have a lead on Brisbane 21 August 1992 - CT version, for the love of Bob, let me know. Please!

That's kind of how I think of it, too. But more broadly it can be about anything or anyone that makes you feel like crap about yourself. Save
