I'd disagree with that, these days the photographer relies heavily on gadgets. A very good friend of mine is the official Arsenal photographer, plus the MCC official photographer. He sets his cameras up behind one goal at The Emirates and has other cameras down the other end. He takes random photos on a timer, if something is happening down the other end he'll be "remotely" clicking away whilst being the length of the pitch away.
But his photos appear in virtually every English newspaper or sports magazine after every Arsenal game. His photos adorn the corridors and Executive Suites at The Emirates, not bad for "not an artist"
You just tell me how much money do you think he is gonna earn with this book.
I'll leave that for you to work out, let's just say that I can imagine those pretty boxes that they came in didn't cost half as much as the ridiculous price folk paid!
Anyhow, that's your choice to buy and as I said enjoy them genuinely. I myself preferred to spend my money on actually seeing the band play rather than filling some guys pockets who happened to have the job of photographing them at some time or other. And it wasn't just "his passion",it was his job!
wilgy, with all due respect, you obviously have no idea then of how much costs to print a high quality book and make a box for it. I'm saying this because I work on this field.
OK, I'll work it out for you, even it was you who happily said that he will make lots of money. He will probably don't get more than 25/30K pounds, probably less, depending on the percentages agreed with the gallery, wich are the ones who surely are paying for production costs. I'm sure he may retire for the rest of his life after this.

Well, mort, I'm not impressed. He surely is a good photographer, I'm not saying he is not, I know a lot of photographers that I don't consider artists, and they all publish in the best newspapers. The way you tell me he works is not the way an artist would shot a photo, IMHO. But maybe he is, I don't know.

Wouldn't the photographer also have been paid for the original photos?

Because a "remote"is used for some photos he's not an artist?? Every photographer at every high profile sport occasion will use the same tactic. He or she can't be at more than one place at once. They'll sit where they think the action will be and set up remote cameras at other locations - just as case.

mort, he is covering a sports event with multiple cameras shooting randomly. How can that be art, my friend? That's photo journalism. Is a different thing. I'm not saying is worse, is not. Is just different.
You can find art in anything, you just have to know how to look for it.
Robert needs a memoir - I'll be his ghost writer. I'll do it for free. I would pay him to ghost write for him. Seriously.
No more picture books unless there are stories with the pictures.
How about a book about what each song means and what he was thinking when he wrote it? I would buy that book too.
Speaking of books, has anyone ever bought The Cure and Wishful Thinking?
These picture books are only worth the forward that RS writes.
Also, Sheehan signed his books... what the hell do I want his autograph for?? I mean, I am not an autograph person - I didn't even ask for Lol's despite having his book with me. But Why do I want Sheehan's autograph?? I don't even know who he is????
Genuinely surprised by the lack of love for Tom Sheehan's book - he's one of a handful of people who defined how an era of music looked, if you grew up reading the music press then you saw his stuff all the time. I dont think his book is a massive money spinner, its a limited run on one small part of his portfolio. Always nice to see TH14 in his prime though!
Whats the new book, is there a link to details somewhere?

All of this up here yes^^^^ I am not an autograph seeker either. I would rather take a photo with someone. Yes art is in the eye of the beholder. What is art to one person may be nothing to someone else. I am not downplaying anyone who buys the picture books by any means because the bottom line is if it brings YOU pleasure then it is worth every penny you paid for it. Same thing with music. I can separate the art from the artist. Even if I'm not a fan of a certain artist I will still buy their art whether it be music, photos, etc... if it makes ME happy.
