I always wanted to go to the Bowery, never had the opportunity. I like a good mazy venue though! My NYC exploits have been limited to CBGBs and MSG. And very briefly sneaking into Radio City for a snoop.
Yes, Radio City is gorgeous. I saw Dead Can Dance there once and, unfortunately, the Rockettes Christmas show.
I remember smoking a joint on the pool table at CBGB's back in about 1993 visiting from college for CMJ. It was a John Spencer Blues Explosion show. That place was the diviest of all dives that ever dove.
It was on such a nothing block but the second you walked in it was like walking back in time - amazing vibe in there
Hey @notkristie, saw your post just now! No, never heard of METZ before, but I’ll look into them. Always a pleasure to learn about different/ ‘new to me’ Canadian bands.
The Ruts came very close to blowing The Stranglers away, really clean punchy sound. Can't compete with the back catalogue though.. Sad to see them reduced to just JJ but still a class act. And Always The Sun is a timeless wonder

Been a busy week (and it's only Tuesday..), saw Damon Albarn's icelandic orchestral night on Mon. Played pretty much all his recent album and a bunch of outtakes from the session. Moody, not exactly a party. Good tho!
Went to a local venue last night during torrential rain and wind to see Upper Wilds, Chris Brokaw (formerly of Codeine), and Savak, for whom it was an album release show. I had seen two of the three acts before, but not Chris Brokaw.
Here is a picture of my friend Dan's band, Upper Wilds, opening. Terrible picture because I'm really shy about taking pictures at shows. They played a few songs from my favorite of their albums, Mars, as well as some new material, which worked well. I am so happy that they're one of my favorite bands (and that album is also a favorite among all albums I own) even though when we became friends, I had no idea he was a musician. Kismet. I also finally got a Mars shirt, and asked for the biggest one that could be found. Takes up a lot of the queen-sized bed.
Chris Brokaw was next. I really enjoyed him and his lyrics are hilarious ("I had sex with the devil"). He played beautifully and was captivating. Here is an album of his on the merch table that I thought was interesting. I'll look into it more, but should have bought it last night.
Savak has been very energetic and musically solid both times I've seen them. This release is their fifth album. If I had a house party for people "our age" (50-ish), I would totally invite them to play.
I wore sexy rain pants for the entire show (a good way to prevent being hit on when alone, along with a wedding ring) because I took the subway and walked. Hung out in the "green room", which was really charcoal and had great wall art, which I meant to take a picture of. Here is the raging gutter as I walked home, late.

The guy standing to the left of me was recording. Dan put a clip of their set up on Twitter.
I'm bummed that Wet Leg is playing twice in my area & are opening acts on way too expensive shows. Playing a lame festival & opening for Florence & the Machine. Was hoping for a nice club show. I kind of like Florence but not enough to spend over $100 for it. Thank God Amyl & the Sniffers are doing their own show in a club!

So tempting but such high stakes - both very hard to cover well, especially that skinny purple fella.
Not sure about Wet Leg, ok but a bit too try hard dead pan. Would see them in a tiny place, they've sold out most of their Nov tour within range.
Saw Florence on Tuesday, theatre gig. Still got the pipes and the newer stuff all sounds good, bit of a makeshift band tho.
I like them. At least it's something new, not the same old crap over & over again. I'm pretty much done with acts that just go out & flog the oldies repeatedly. Been there, done that & in some cases bought the t-shirt.
Amyl & the Sniffers were amazing last night! I went to the box office to get my tickets before the doors opened. My buddy backed out at the very last minute & I couldn't find anyone to go. The show was way sold out, so I told the girl at the box office to give the ticket away if someone came up looking for one. Good karma. The show was at the new version of a famous Seattle club, the Crocodile Cafe. They were forced out of the original space by greedy landlords. The group of owners are well financed & include at least one member of Alice in Chains. They offered to buy the original building but were rebuffed. So, they bought a building that originally was a real high end steak house. It's a big space. The main room has a capacity of 750 & they have another room that holds 300. Amyl were in the big room & it was jammed. The show had sold out instantly & the crowd was crazy. They did a fantastic job redoing the space for music. While I was getting my tickets, Amy Taylor came out to greet the fans that were there early. I got to talk to her for a bit about Aussie bands & got a picture with her. She was super sweet & very down to earth. The show exceeded expectations by far. They are like the Stooges with Amy playing the role of Iggy Pop. I got a video of my favorite song, "Knifey" & will try to post if I can figure it out. Also got some good pics with my low end phone. At the end of "Knifey" some drunk @$$hole decided to rush the stage in spite of a metal barrier in his way. I had been given a chair at the barrier due to disability. This motherfooker totally blind side tackled me & you can see when it happened on the video. I don't think I broke anything but I'm all bruised up today. steve , if I can't get the video on here maybe you can work some magic. Despite of that, the show was tied with Nick Cave for the best I've seen since concerts started again. It was worth the pain. Probably a good thing that I already had a doctor appointment today. It was totally worth the pain though! In a just world, Amy would be Mrs. Chuck haha.
