The Grand Canyon (GC) trip was a memorable and so enjoyable that I had to share it with you all.
The main goal of the trip was to celebrate my wife’s birthday and to keep the trip simple. Drive to the GC SKYWALK (SK), celebrate a birthday and enjoy the rest of the week. Throw in a hike with my friend and weather and time permitting, add a water rafting trip.
Well, as most of you know, sometimes plans do not pan out as originally planned but that’s why there is always room for the unexpected and often one goes with the flow. This little story is a recap of my trip and the Cure songs and thoughts that ensued.
The morning before the trip I awoke to a sharp pain on my right eye. I was a little dazed and confused as I slowly made my way to the bathroom to see what the hell was going. Looking at the mirror I literally could not see what was up with my right eye since everything was fuzzy and blurry. This song pop into my head,
On candy stripe legs the spiderman comes
Softly through the shadow of the evening sun
Stealing past the windows of the blissfully dead
Looking for the victim shivering in bed
Searching out fear in the gathering gloom and
Suddenly
A movement in the corner of the room
And there is nothing I can do
When I realize with fright
That the spiderman is having me for dinner tonight
Oh, no I thought, maybe I contracted something from my dog Lulu since she also had problems with her right eye and got my eye infected. Three days out in the wild, no medical services nearby, I had to ensure that my eye was going to be OK. The Optometry’s did her examination and determined that I had someone scratched in my eye.-damn Spiderman. He gave me some eye drops and some antibiotics because she knew that I was going to be out on the wild. She also stated, be careful if you get your eye wet.
Darn it!!, strike one on my plans-No rafting.
I immediately called my friend and told him the bad news. He stated that something else had come up at work and that there was no way that he could meet us in Phoenix as planned. Any hopes of water rafting was out of the question now.
The day of the trip, Blurry eyed, we headed on the six hour trip from San Diego to Phoenix. It was going to be a long one but armed with 12 hours of the recent cure concerts and endless song on my iPod we headed out to meet my Mom. In the car, the misses talked with her childhood friend, who tag along for the trip, my son played his WII-u on the car and of course I listed to the Jun 18th-19th New York Concert (Great recording by the way). I hummed and sang lyrical verses and found my wife and her friend chiming in from time to time. The first leg of the trip seemed long but thanks to the recording I was lost and mesmerized in the lyrical verses and soothing songs that made the time fly.
In Phoenix we picked up my mom at my niece house, said a quick hi to her and we were back on the road again. A two and a half hours trip from Phoenix to Flagstaff gave me another chance to listen to the last New York show. A half an hour into the trip, there was a warning signs about a delay of traffic because of a brush fire that had swept across Highway 17th and that there could be an hour to two delay if I remain on current course. I paused the current recording, switched to a song from Three Imaginary boys, song #4 and began to sing it.

I looked at my GPS and tried to see if there was another way to flagstaff. To my surprise, Lola (that what we called our GPS because of her voice) offered a separate route to reach Flagstaff. Highway 85 was the scenic route but it meant adding at least 1 hour more to the drive. I had no choice, I exited the freeway and headed in the opposite direction to where Lola had directed me. I looked on the bright side, I can get more time to listen to the Cure. I change course and headed the opposite way then resume the rest of the concert. The views on the Highway 85 were spectacular, driving through US forest service land was marvelous and breathtaking. I switch gears on my music selection and played this song: 3x
Suddenly I stop

I tried to Periscope the view while the song played in the background but lost connection 36 seconds into the live feed. The girls in the car sang along and I smiled as we past a little town called Strawberry. Really strawberry- at least that’s what I though. It just happen that Push had just finished when I noticed the towns name. I had to hear it again. (This song will forever remind me of sang because she was quick to post the verse-like strawberry and cream- on the forum)

We arrived at flagstaff around 7pm. Just in time to check into the hotel and grab a quick bite. The Greek food we had was so good…Anyway, we turn in around 10 pm, had a long day ahead of us.
On the Road again the following morning, three concerts in the memory bank, I selected the Chula Vista Concert downloaded the morning off. This time the trip from Flagstaff to the GCSK was around 3.5 hours, but unlike the other scenic view this trip offered remote areas that even my phone provider could not cover. That was OK to me, I had my music to listen to.
When we arrived at the Skywalk, we were greeted by a thunderous storm, rain drops as big and heavy as marvels. To celebrate the occasion I pop in this song.

And drab the hours all spent on killing time
Again all waiting for the rain
I had forgotten how wet dirt smells, but it was so wonderful. I literally took it all in. The rain wasn’t going to stop anytime soon, the good thing was that I came prepared and had two umbrellas and rain suits for such occasion (research pays off). We skipped the suits and gambled with the umbrellas thinking that by the time we reach our destination the rain would subside. Before we could reach the Skywalk we had to pay in order to enter the Hualapai Indian reservation. We knew that the Skywalk was going to be close to the public if a drop of water hit the platform made of glass. Disappointed a bit we headed the reservation in the hopes that the rain was going to stop. The tour bus had three destinations, the Hualapai Ranch, the Eagle point (where the skywalk is), and Guano point. No such luck with the rain for the GCSK but we made the best of it. While everyone was taking cover from the rain at the GCSK we literally had the GC view all to ourselves. Although we couldn’t walk on the glass as it hangs over the edge on the GC we would still see the grand views from anywhere we wanted to. We took plenty of pictures and all of us were blown away by the spectacular view. I felt so small in comparison and started to develop a fear for my son. He showed no fear as he literally walk close to the edge. Call it parental instinct but I fear for him. We had a few hours there and then headed to our final destination, Guano point.
At the Guano point there were better views that one could ask for. We hiked the area to the higher point to get the best possible picture. When we found a spot that we most enjoyed we sat down and without anyone saying a word we sat. Thoughts and Song filled my mind as we all sat there and just looked down to the bottom:

We wanted to see the sunset at the Guano point but the reservation closed its doors to the public too early for that to happen. We waited until the security of the place escorted us to leave.
The following day I awoke to a nightmare. I had dreamed that my son had fallen over the edge
A nightmare of you
of death in the pool
I see no further now than this dream
the trembling hand of the trembling man
Hold my mouth
to hold in a scream
To worry to go back to sleep I left the hotel room and decided to take out some energy. The hotel had an elliptical machine that I could use to burn some of this thoughts of mine. As I left our hotel room I notice steve cat-Basil’s twin on the neighbor’s window ledge and smiled. IPod in hand, I selected Join the dot and did enough on the elliptical to burn the worry from my mind. Once I finished I headed back to the Upstairs Room and noticed another cat, a white one this time sitting on the window ledge of my neighbor’s room. Black and White..hmm All cats are gray. This was going to be a good Cure Day!!
That morning we had plan to take a train ride from Williams AZ, to the GC national Park. In route to Williams I notice a billboard for the Heritage Park Zoological Sanctuary. The funny thing was that it had 2 avatar that lioness uses, on the edge of the billboard. I smiled as I recalled this year TCC word ZAPISZ. At Williams we board the train as I selected jumping someone else train to the selection. Check out The video
At the GC National park there is a hike that anyone willing can take down to the bottom of the canyon. I originally intended to take the hike with my friend as the family was to enjoy the scenic views and all the splendor of the canyon but I could not do so because of my right eye. Instead the family decided to hike down as far as we could and then head back. My mom, a 65 year old, 5 ft 3 IN beast of a woman, took the challenge and walk down with all of us. One point down the trip my mom commented and said “You know who would have loved this, your brother”.
I got a bit teary eyed but I didn’t want my mom to see me, not that she could since I had my shades on. My brother passed away during a hike about 18 years ago. He was found underneath a bush on the Arizona desert. The Cause was dehydration…He was 1 year younger than me and also Loved the Cure. This is for you my bro...

We laughed about last year
The games we played, the songs we sang
Moms sure know how to hit the heart…… they sure know when to say things. I went over to her and just gave her a hug. Not saying a word.
The hike up the canyon was exhausting but well worth it. At the top we hit some shops and bough a book for my son who our guide in the train had mention. If you get a chance take a look at it>>Over the Edge: Death in the Grand Canyon. <<Reminds me of @mort as I read a few passages.
The final leg of the tour offered a Hualapai final dance. I recorded most of it. I'll upload it when I can. I also smiled as the Hualapai instructor of the students commented “this is the Last Dance”.
