I'm intrigued as to why you would think that - it has never crossed my mind as being controversial song.
Although I can't recall it getting much air-play on day-time radio on the main stations. More of specialist night programme (like when Radio 1 had some decent presenters... muttter-mutter).
Although RS has basically admitted it's about animals "bumping uglies", it isn't directly stated in the lyrics & anyone who could possibly take offence to it has to be a snowflake of the most fragile kind For sure Peel would have played it, but it was certainly not the most "radio friendly" track to pick as a single.
I was a very passionate animal rights activist when I first heard this song - yeah a fourteen year old hunt saboteur seriously - up at 4 am to go out distracting toffs dogs from the fox - and so I took this literally to be a slaughterhouse animal rights song - I know it isn't - but it still sounds like the slaughterhouse cry of 'Stop!' to me.
As an ethical Vegan myself, I find that an interesting take. I've always fancied designing a t-shirt with the line 'I'm sharing the a world of slaughtered pigs' from OHY..
