Wish as a whole is just a lot of Robert Smith yelling.
Individually, tracks like A Letter to Elise and Friday I'm in Love are great stuff. From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea doesn't really come together except live in concert. High is fun.
Can you explain what you mean by those two comments please. I'm curious as to why you think is..
If you have a lead on Brisbane 21 August 1992 - CT version, for the love of Bob, let me know. Please!
I count four comments in your quote. As a theme album, I thought it was tacky and pretensious to have tracks labeled "Open" and "End", as if they were making some big statement. Still do.
I like half the album, which is still pretty good.

True, I was being lazy..
I think Open is called that because of the open tuning of the main guitar, not the fact it's the first track on the album.. Can't make the same comment about End though...

End represents Bob's perceived end of the band, surely. Or the end of Bob's ability to satisify people's expectations of him.

It's the flip-side to "Fight"?
I initially thought that the lyrics to End are about two things, or are in response to two people/groups:
The verses are about a relationship breaking down not because the protagonist wants it to but because it's run its course, where all dreams are realised and what was once a cherished dream is now just bland and old. Sort of like saying "no matter what was, now it's just nothing and I can't be bothered."
I could list each verse as they convey this sentiment but to me the last verse really goes to town on this idea:
"I think I've reached that point
Where every word that you write
Of every blood dark sea
And every soul black night
And every dream you dream me in
And every perfect free from sin
And burning eyes
And hearts on fire
Are just the same old song"
All the beauty and raw emotion is just nothing... wow...
Then I was thinking that the second part of the song was that the chorus was aimed at rabid fans. I thought that "Please stop loving me, I am none of these things" did not fit the the context of the theme of the verse lyrics.
But in writing this I thought about it a bit more and looked at the words from the perspective that the "Please stop loving me" is a plea for the sake of the person it's being said TO... because when the protagonist says "I am none of these things" he's actually talking about the good things, that now no longer are... if this is where he's going with it, then yes the chorus fits the verses directly and yes it's a plea to the ex-loved one to leave it all as he's the one with no love or feeling left...
That's some good words there by Mister Bob. Only took me 23 years to get that... FARK....

REMIXES
HIGH Let me put a caveat out there that of all the Wish songs (including b-sides and Tape), "High" is the one I like the least. As a single I think it fails, the video is boring and uninspired and coming off the back of Never Enough, Close To Me 91 and whatever else came out in the Mixed Up period, to say I was disappointed when I saw this on Rage or on the radio is a huge understatment... But onwards...
Single mix - from the 7' & CD single From memory, very similar to the album mix, and from listening: not particularly interesting.
Higher Mix - from the 12" & CD single Basically an extended mix or remix, much better than the original song due to the extended breaks and parts and the vocal effects applied in parts.
Trip mix - from the High Trip Mix 12" & CD single A better mix than the album, single and strangelove mixes, you can hear some flanging on some part but all in all not a great song to start with. A good little finish to the song right at the end.
FRIDAY I'M IN LOVE Strangelove Mix - from the 12" & CD single Great extended mix of a fantastic song. Great percussive bits at the 3:57 mark.
A LETTER TO ELISE Blue Mix - from the 12" & CD single Great extended mix of a great song.
DOING THE UNSTUCK Saunders 12" Remix - from Join The Dots & others?
A trippy extended mix that really brought this song into the fore for me.. I never gave it much attention when Wish came out, I don't think I gave it a proper listen nor a chance to grow on me. Shame on me. Porl's guitar work on it is excellent, and impressive as always and it really shines through on this mix. Overall a great mix!
OPEN Fix Mix - from the High Trip Mix 12" & CD It's Open, possibly the greatest song ever written.. what more can be said? This mix adds to the song but does not surpass the original, rather it adds a different dimension to it creating another version of perfection. It has some swriling guitar effects on it that add to the overall sonic experience and some extra "doo doo doo doo"s too. At the beginning of the song what is clearly a studio out-take "Are we gonna record this?". A lot of the time when listening to Wish, I will replace the album version with this one.
