In 1993 I bought the official concert releases Show and Sideshow. Wikipedia explains how Sideshow was simply made to complete the tracks left off the American single-CD release of Show.
Out of the flurry of live releases from that time, I liked Paris and the Pictures of You CD single (because it had four tracks from Entreat, unavailable in the U.S.) much more. I played those CDs over and over, so I sort of neglected these two.
I resolved to unite the versions into a single concert, which I play for myself at home as follows:
00 Tape (sideshow)
01 Open
02 High
03 Pictures of You
04 Lullaby
05 Just Like Heaven
06 Fascination Street (sideshow)
07 A Night Like This
08 Trust
09 Doing the Unstuck
10 The Walk (sideshow)
11 Let's Go to Bed (sideshow)
12 Friday I'm in Love
13 In Between Days
14 From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea
15 Never Enough
16 Cut
17 End
But thanks to the bootleg community, I learned even this is not a true representation, as this was cobbled together over two nights of shows, to quote "The Palace of Auburn Hills, Auburn Hills, Michigan (a suburb of Detroit) in 1992, during the successful Wish tour". The Show video also has different track selections, such as A Forest.
Perhaps in the future we can get a 'Show Deluxe' release from The Cure, although there is probably not much of a clamor for it. I just didn't think the concert overall had energy. But here are some of the highlights I liked.
Tape is one of the oddest tracks ever officially released by the Cure. Not a single and not part of any album, just something the band put together to get the audience in the mood. It still sounds magical today, full of wonder.
I like Just Like Heaven, Fascination Street, and A Night Like This. These sound pretty fresh on this tour. Audience reaction seemed huge for Inbetween Days, who doesn't want to hear this live? I think instead of ending the show with... End, I would have preferred A Forest. Of course, getting the entire show would have been preferable. Perhaps it should have been accurately called Show- instead. (The same for Paris, that would make a great triple CD release.)
For those interested in buying Show and Sideshow, I see you can still buy Show new, and Sideshow real cheap used. Here are my scans of what they look like if you haven't seen the American editions. Note how the Show sleeve opens to a foldout poster, which is neat:
So, discuss please. Is Show a lame release, or representative of the Wish tour?
