Only 30 some odd pages in and this book really gives me the willies. It's just really unsettling and foreboding. Heavy for kids, which is good. I will see if my son wants to read it to himself.
I didn't know RS had taken some of the lyrics for the song verbatim from the text. Straight off, first paragraph. Should have his knuckles wrapped with a ruler for plagiarism! Flogging time!
Read this a couple of years ago and remember really liking it! If you're interested you can read about Farmer's experience with the song and meeting Smith here and here

Thanks so much, nothingleftbutfaith! I have never stumbled upon those accounts before. It's so cool to get PF's perspective on the whole thing.
I really think this is a book I will end up purchasing. PF does such a great job of building atmosphere, IMHO. I know some of the creepiness I sense in the book can be attributed to picturing the video (as funny as it really is) and hearing the song in my head while I'm reading it.
Done with War and Peace, and now my ladies and gentlemen...
May I present: the Idiot by “you know who - the Dosto-guy!”
Again I must admit, that I’m really drawn into the historic russian life”style”...
I really don’t want to be that kind of person that is into russian litterature, because I’m not a 75 years old man - yet... It’s so uncool and un-ninja to read stuff like that.
So now I have turned my russian litterature into a true guilty pleasure... *whisper* -that we really don’t talk about...
(Did I mention, that I actually suggested to my daughters, that we go to Skt. Petersburg - do you think they rolled their eyes, or do you think they rolled their eyes?)
I started reading Stephen Ki....I mean Richard Bachman's Roadwork... figured it would be fitting for Halloween... I think I read 4 pages... I have so many books I am dying to read right now.. unfortunately I don't have time and when I do... I just don't feel up to it right now.
Also ninja, are you sure you are not a 75 year old man, because I am pretty sure I might be...

If you like Russian authors have you ever read any Gogol? The Nose? Very different from Dostoyevsky or Tolstoy...

Since I'm a student I mostly read assigned readings and articles at the moment. This is an assigned book I need have read by tomorrow, (so very currently reading) but I needed a small break to complain
Now, usually I'm all for books that are a bit odd/have an unusual narrative style, but this is giving me a headache! The narration is in first person from the pov of the protagonist who is 11 years old, which obviously isn't an issue. The issue for me is that is is written the way an 11 year old would tell a story which means the syntax gets really janky at times. (I feel like I can't write in English anymore after reading a hundred pages.) And to make matters even worse, there is barely any punctuation! There's only dots, question marks and exclamation marks, no quotation marks and not even any apostrophes! And there's a lot of contractions in this book
