47th was at the Eurockéennes festival for SummerCure 2012 : I left home in the morning to take the train going to Belfort. And the adventure began... At one stop, the train driver announced that a "traveler incident" forced us to stay stopped for a period indeterminate. And so I started to stress ... but after 20 minutes we left. This is when my mobile phone broke, while I had to meet a stranger in Belfort to give him a spare ticket I had. And tell my family everything was ok.
When I found a solution for these problems, I still had to wait 4 hours before the doors open. The weather was very sunny and hot (about 35°C -> 95°F). Had a meal under the trees, and then it's been a quick walk to the main stage to be at the front row.
Still very hot, at 4.15 pm 1st band to play were Sallie Ford. Boring. But have to wait...
Then at 6.15 pm came Mastodon, a metal band. Not so bad. I even quite liked them. But there were lots of very young fans who didn't stop to make crowd surfing... EVERY forking MINUTE there was one guy who went over me. And it became quite aggressive. Plus, there were making lots and lots of dust, so the air breathing became difficult...
At 8.15 pm it was the Dropkick Murphys. Sort of punk rock for sailors. Don't like them. Movements in the crowd too. But the weather wasn't as hot as in the afternoon so it was better...
But they didn't finish their set... It became very windy "and the sky goes black"... a huge storm was expected. And so about half an hour before The Cure set, the sky exploded !! MASSIVE RAIN fell on us. Put my rain coat on but it was so huge than in few minutes it passed through. I lowered my head and looked at the rain dripping on my shoes... The rain stopped for a while but it was still threatening. And for safety reason, the speaker told the crowd to step back from the stage. but people didn't want to move and there were soooo many people it was hard to move. Finally we went 2 meters back. Waiting.
We feared a cancellation as they took down some big amps and it rained hard again. Every move I made, I felt my trouser was completely soaked. At 11.00 pm, the concert should have started since half an hour and I thought about my children in bed and I thought "what the hell I'm doing here?... Never again I'll go at a festival"... And I thought about selling my ticket for Les Vieilles Charrues festival...
And then, at about 23.15 pm... the little bells of Plainsong started to ring. The band came on stage. And I was in heaven. I didn't felt my legs were hurting anymore, that I was hungry, that I was soaked, And I thought "if I had to do it again tomorrow, I'd do it! For sure!!!"
The setlist was one of a festival but it was great ! Compared to Bestival, I really think a 5 pieces band is the best option for The Cure. There must be a keyboard and 2 guitars. It sounds better. Highlight for me was 'One Hundred Years' followed by 'Disintegration'... Oh my heart has melted.
I left the festival at the end of the show and went to buy some Cure merchandise. The whole place was like a sea of mud...
Then I get back to the train station and as I am concerned too late to book a room, I spent the night in the station, waiting for the 1st train going back to Paris at 6.00 am, muddy and wet. But very happy...
first concert I saw was Grenoble on December 85. I used to work in radio (for free) and the boss gave me one ticket to see the Cure(no idea about how they've got it...)I discovered them during the summer, so I didn't know all the song they played, and I was very impressed by all the Robert looks-like..(few weeks after, I was like them!!!)Another souvenir was in Marseille in 87 were the rescue crew brought people felt bad to the infirmary through the stage while the band was playing...
And it's so cold it's like the cold if you were dead
One year ago on June 1..was the first time I ever saw them. EVER. It was in Barcelona and it was something I will never ever forget. It was Simon's birthday and I met beautiful people...such a lovely and magical evening, and not to forget "Just One Kiss".
